2006 NCAA Convention Division I Issues Forum

The 2006 Division I Issues Forum will consist of four presentations each lasting approximately 30 minutes. A 10-minute break has been scheduled at the halfway point at 10:15 a.m.

Title: Update from the Division I Committee on Academic Performance

Description: This session will provide attendees with an update on the Division I academic performance program, including the historical penalty structure and possible "cut points," the incentives program, and other updates from the committee's recent meeting.

Panel: Walter Harrison, President, University of Hartford; Kevin Lennon, NCAA; Julie Cromer, NCAA; Todd Petr, NCAA; Diane Dickman, NCAA

Title: Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Update

Description: An update on the planning and evolution of Division I basketball by the Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Committees that will include a discussion of uses and priorities related to the regular season, the selection process, women's basketball branding initiatives and the men's college basketball partnership.

Panel: Greg Shaheen, NCAA, and Sue Donohoe, NCAA

Title: Racial and Gender Hiring Retention: Practices and Issues

Description: This session will feature a report that will highlight the composition, assessed by racial and gender make-up, of student-athletes, coaches and athletics administrators within collegiate athletics departments in Division I. In addition, the presentation will feature an assessment of hiring practices and issues for women and people of color within Division I member institutions.

Title: A First Look at the Effects of Recent Initial-Eligibility Changes

Description: Beginning with the entering freshman class of 2003, NCAA initial-eligibility legislation was changed to remove the "cut-score" minimum on standardized tests (i.e., SAT and ACT). Data are now available to assess initial impacts of that change. This presentation will compare the high school academic profiles of student-athletes before and after this change in initial-eligibility rules. Additionally, the presentation will compare the first-year college performances of student-athletes at Division I institutions who entered under the old and new rules.
