2007 Career Connections Program Descriptions

Programming Session I - "A View from the Top:  How to Prepare Yourself for a Career in Intercollegiate Athletics"

A panel of upper-level administrators representing Divisions I, II, III and a conference office who will speak about the intercollegiate athletics industry, the differences between their institutions, how to best prepare to enter the field, and other topics that will help broaden your scope of knowledge about the intercollegiate athletics industry.  The following administrators will be speaking on this panel:

Alfreeda Goff - Senior Associate Commissioner/Chief of Staff, Horizon League

Jody Mooradian - Senior Associate Athletics Director/ Senior Women's Administrator, Boston College

Tim Parker - Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance, Virginia Tech

Karen Seals - Assistant Athletics Director, University of West Florida

Programming Session II - "The Here and Now: A Day in the Life of an Athletics Administrator"

A panel of mid-level administrators representing different career fields within intercollegiate athletics who will be able to give you a "day-in-the-life" perspective.  These administrators have recently been in your shoes and will be able to talk about how they got their foot in the door.  The following administrators will be speaking on this panel:

Lorin Maurer - Athletics Friends Group Manager, Princeton University

Joshua Centor - Coordinator of New Media, NCAA

Jane Teixeira - Senior Associate Director of Compliance/SWA, Texas A&M International University

Guy M. Harrison - Sports Information Assistant, Nova Southeastern University

Programming Session III - "Success Stories: Trials and Tribulations of Breaking into Sports" 

A panel of former interns, FAU Sport Management Program Director James Riordan and NCAA Vice President for Education Services Ron Stratten will discuss the ups and downs of obtaining a job in intercollegiate athletics. Stratten, who is also the founder of Pathfinder for Success, will be available to share his resource and discuss other tools to help young professionals land on their feet. Ask this panel the pressing questions you have concerning how to go about getting your dream job. What should you expect moving forward? What's the mindset you need to keep your passion alive? The following administrators will be speaking on this panel:

Jim Riordan - Director of the MBA in Sport Management Program, Florida Atlantic University

Ron Stratten - Vice President for Education Services, NCAA

Kari Stark - Former NCAA intern and Current candidate for a Masters in Sports Managament from University of Massachussetts, Amherst

John Semeraro - Graduate Assistant in Ohio University Office of Development for Annual Giving, current candidate in Sports Administration from Ohio University and former member of the Division II Student Athlete Advisory Committee. 

Programming Session IV:  "What Lies Ahead: Schooling Yourself for Success"

Scott McGowan and Sherard Clinkscales of AfterSport Group will equip you with all the necessary tools to put you on the fast track to career success. They will help you focus your career map, develop your networking and interviewing skills and address any questions you have concerning the highs and lows of job searching. AfterSport Group will also offer tips for professional development with suggestions for finding potential job opportunities in places other than the NCAA Web site.
