WALTER
BYERS SCHOLARSHIP
The
committee held a teleconference in March 1999, and met on April 18 and 19,
1999, in Orlando, Florida.
Committee actions are as follows:
1. The committee selected three male and three female finalists for the scholarship. The male finalists were: Eric Brands, Alma College; Aaron Harries, University of California, Los Angeles; and S. Calvin Thigpen, University of Mississippi. The female finalists were: Gladys Ganiel, Providence College; Rikke Pedersen, Northern Arizona University; and Katherine Pesek, University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
After interviewing the finalists, the committee selected Mr. Thigpen and Ms. Ganiel as the 1999 award winners.
2. The
committee recommended that the finalists who were not chosen as a Byers Scholar
receive a Postgraduate Scholarship in recognition of being a Byers Scholar
finalist.
3. The
committee recommended that the Byers Scholars be recognized for their
achievement in a public forum, and that efforts should be made to increase
publicity surrounding the scholarship itself and each year’s winners.
4. The
committee agreed to provide 1998 awardee Ms. Harris with a second year
grant. Mr. Gray, the other 1998
awardee, decided to defer his scholarship another year.
