MINUTES OF THE
WALTER BYERS POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARHIP COMMITTEE OF THE
NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
The Hyatt Regency La Jolla April 30 – May 1, 2000

Those in attendance were:

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by the chair, Mr. Diles. Those in attendance introduced themselves after which Mr. Diles and Mr. Bray reviewed the purpose of the agenda for the meeting.
1. Previous Minutes.
It was VOTED
“That the minutes from the April 18-19, 1999 meeting be approved as submitted.”
2. Interview Times and Order. At the conclusion of dinner the candidates drew for interview times and a drawing was held to determine if the male or the female candidates would interview first.
3. Review of Deferral Requests. The committee reviewed a request for a second deferral of the scholarship for 1999 Byers Scholar Calvin Thigpen.
It was VOTED
“That the committee approves
the deferral request from Calvin Thigpen.”
4. Review of Renewal Requests. The committee reviewed a request for a renewal of the scholarship for a second year for 1999 Byers Scholar Gladys Ganiel.
It was VOTED
“That the committee approves the renewal request for Gladys Ganiel.”
5. NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. The committee expressed continued interest in securing $5,000 Postgraduate Scholarships for the four Byers finalists that are not selected as Byers Scholars in recognition of being selected as a Byers finalist. Mr. Bray was directed to continue to work toward securing the funding needed to provide the additional scholarship.
6. Review of the Application Packet. The committee suggested that a checklist be provided in the 2000-01 application to assist candidates and faculty athletics representatives in completing the application. The committee also requested that the transcript that is requested be an official transcript sealed by the registrar’s office.
7. Publicity for the Scholarship Program and the Winners. The committee expressed continued interest in creating more publicity for the scholarship program and the recent awardees through the NCAA Hall of Champions and other methods to be initiated by staff.

The meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m. by the chair, Mr. Diles. Mr. Bray and Mr. Diles reviewed the interview structure and the order of candidates to be interviewed.
8. Interview of Scholarship Finalists. The committee interviewed the six finalists for the Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship. The order for the interviews was as follows:
1. Craig Pierstorff, University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh;
2. Parsa Bonderson, University of California, Los Angeles;
3. Matthew Busbee, Auburn University;
4. Catherine L’Armand, Widener University;
5. Ginger Denison, Furman University; and
6. Anna Hallbergson, Barry University.
9. Selection of Byers Scholars. After the interviews and deliberations, the committee selected Mr. Busbee and Ms. Hallbergson to be the 2000 Byers Scholarship recipients. The first alternate for the women will be Ms. L’Armand, and for the men will be Mr. Bonderson. The second alternates are Ms. Denison and Mr. Pierstorff. The committee noted the difficulty of the decision, and congratulated all of the finalists on their outstanding achievements during their collegiate careers.
10. Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
