NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
WALTER BYERS SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

[Note: These minutes contain only actions taken (formal votes or stated “sense of the meeting”) in accordance with the NCAA policy regarding minutes of all Association entities. While certain items on the committee’s agenda were acted on at various times throughout the meeting, all final actions within a given topic are combined in these minutes for convenience of reference.]
The meeting was called to order at 6 p.m. by the chair, Mr. Diles. Those in attendance introduced themselves after which Mr. Diles and Mr. Bray reviewed the agenda for the meeting.
1. Approval of Previous Minutes.
It was VOTED
“That the minutes from the March 24, 2000, telephone conference; the April 30 through May 1, 2000, meeting; and the March 14, 2001, telephone conference be approved as submitted.”
2. Interview Order and Times. At the conclusion of dinner, the committee held a drawing to determine if the male or the female candidates would interview first, after which the candidates drew for their interview times.
3. Interview Questions. Mr. Bray reviewed which committee member was assigned which topic area for the interview questions. The topic areas were athletics, academics, community service, future vision, and what sets the finalist apart from the other candidates. Mr. Diles then determined the order the questions were to be asked of each finalist.
4. Past Scholarship Winners Update. Mr. Bray and Mr. Diles gave an update on the 2000 NCAA Walter Byers Scholarship winners, Anna Hallbergson and Matt Busbee.
5. Review of Application Packet. The committee reviewed and made suggestions for changes to next year’s application.
6. Future Meetings. The committee decided to conduct next year’s meeting in late April. Mr. Diles and Mr. Bray will determine the location.
7.
Publicity for the Scholarship Program and the Winners. The committee expressed
continued interest in creating more publicity for the scholarship program
through the NCAA Honors Dinner.
Mr. Bray expressed that the honors committee meets October 18 and will
discuss adding recognition of the Byers Scholars to the Honors Dinner
program. A decision will be made
in December 2001. If approved, the
2003 Honors Dinner is the earliest this recognition could be added to the
program.
8. Other Business. Mr. Bray announced that this meeting would be the last for Mr. Edwards. He will be rotating off the committee and the NCAA Division II Management Council will appoint a new member. On behalf of the NCAA, Mr. Bray thanked Mr. Edwards for his service on the committee.

April 23
The meeting was called to order at 7:45 a.m. by the chair, Mr. Diles. Mr. Bray and Mr. Diles reviewed the interview structure and the order in which the committee would interview the candidates.
9. Interview of Scholarship Finalists. The committee interviewed the six finalist for the
Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship. The order for the interviews was as follows:
a. James Sostak, Benedictine University;
b. Alfred Mansour III, Texas A&M University;
c. Bradley Henderson, University of Chicago;
d. Kimberly Black, University of Georgia;
e. Jill Razor, Rollins College; and
f. Andrea Dutoit, University of Arizona.
10. Selection of Byers Scholars. After the interviews and deliberations, the committee selected Mr. Henderson and Ms. Black to be the 2001 Walter Byers Scholarship recipients. The first alternate for the men is Mr. Mansour III, and the first alternate for the women is Ms. Dutoit. The committee noted the difficulty of the decisions and congratulated all of the finalists on their outstanding achievements during their collegiate careers.
11. Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at 1 p.m.
