COMMITTEE INFORMATION FOR INDIVIDUALS INTERESTED IN POSSIBLY SERVING ON NCAA COMMITTEES

GENERAL DUTIES OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS:
The CSMAS has two subcommittees, the Drug-Education and Drug-Testing Subcommittee, and the Sports Sciences Safety Subcommittee. The Drug-Education and Drug-Testing Subcommittee provides the NCAA membership direction on alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse prevention programs, research and grants, and oversees the NCAA drug-testing program. This committee is charged with hearing drug-test appeals. The Sports Sciences Safety Subcommittee provides guidance on sports specific health and safety research and policy issues. This subcommittee also edits the NCAA Sports Medicine Handbook. All subcommittee recommendations are reviewed for approval by the full committee.

This advisory committee is very involved in reviewing and commenting on legislation regarding sports rules and regulations with health and safety implications.
Committee Mission Statement and Goals: The mission of the CSMAS is to provide expertise and leadership to the Association in order to promote a healthy and safe environment for student-athletes through research, education, collaboration and policy development.
Goal I: To promote and sponsor research to enhance relevant health and safety issues.
Goal II: To promote education to enhance the health and safety of student-athletes.
Goal III: To continually enhance the safety of intercollegiate athletics by operating a national injury surveillance program to monitor injury trends in intercollegiate athletics.
Goal IV: To deter the use of NCAA banned substances in order to promote fair competition and safety.
Goal V: To facilitate outreach activities to enhance student-athlete health and safety.
Goal VI: To provide a health and safety perspective on relevant legislation and policy.
