[Note:  These minutes contain only actions taken (formal votes or stated "sense of the meeting") in accor­dance with NCAA policy regarding minutes of all Association entities.  While certain items on the subcommittee’s agenda were acted on at various times throughout the meeting, all final actions within a given topic are combined in these minutes for convenience of reference.]


The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by the chair, Dr. Landman.  All were present as noted above.


1.  Opening Remarks.  Dr. Landman welcomed the committee.


2.  
Approval of Previous Minutes.


It was VOTED

“That the minutes of the October 23, 2001, NCAA Executive Committee Subcommittee on Gender and Diversity Issues telephone conference minutes be approved.”


3. 
NCAA Executive Committee Subcommittee on Gender and Diversity Issues Audit Report.  Mr. Boggan provided an update on the gender and diversity audit.  The subcommittee discussed the organizational structure and diversity of the national office staff and requested an invitation be sent to President Dempsey to discuss NCAA staffing issues at the October meeting.  Mr. Johnson and Ms. Rinebold updated the subcommittee on the renaming of marketing, licensing and promotions to branding, broadcasting and promotions and that group’s restructuring.  Ms. Sweet updated the subcommittee on the NCAA national office gender equity plan and timetable.


4.  Confederate Battle Flag.  The subcommittee agreed to direct the NCAA Confederate Flag Issues Management Team to limit its review to state and local action that places the Confederate battle flag in public display as a matter of state or local policy.  The subcommittee noted this currently affects the states of South Carolina and Mississippi.


5.  Committee on Women’s Athletics Update.  The subcommittee received a report from the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics (CWA) regarding emerging sports, homophobia educational sessions at the 2002 NCAA Convention, Title IX seminar and the NCAA senior woman administrator job description.


6. 
Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee update.  The subcommittee reviewed the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee’s (MOIC) report regarding the NCAA diversity education program’s review of the use of American Indian mascots, NCAA Summit on Athletics Opportunities for Minority Women, NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males, 2001-02 race demographics report and the NCAA football study.  The subcommittee requested that the MOIC and the CWA continue to work together to develop diversity education workshops in the area of sexual orientation and to provide timely updates on their progress.


7. 
Other.  Dr. Landman thanked Dr. Davis for his contributions and years of service to the subcommittee and recognized the contributions of Drs. Johnston, Morse, and Pelton.
