The meeting was called to order at 8 a.m. by the chair, Ms. Schaukowitch.  All members were present as noted above.

1.      Welcome.  Ms. Schaukowitch welcomed the regional selection committee chairs to the meeting and to Indianapolis.  Everyone present introduced themselves and gave their length of service on the committee.

2.   Business Items.

a.       The national committee wanted to have the regional chairs see how the spring sports finalists ranked to make sure the regional chairs and their committees were considering and weighting core criteria the same way that the national committee does.

Some of the regional selection chairs feel that many of the institutions in their region who have qualified candidates are not submitting nominations.  When those regions have selections, very often all finalists are being forwarded to fulfill the recommended minimum number of finalists per region.  The national committee would prefer that the regional committees select finalists based on the core criteria and, if necessary, forward less than the recommended minimum number of finalists.

It was agreed that the seven regions be reviewed and states be assigned to a different region, if necessary, to gain a better balance of total schools per region.

Each regional selection committee member has a responsibility to communicate with their conference office to support promoting the scholarship.

b.      Suggestions were made to make the application easier to complete and to review.  Most of the recommended changes will be come obsolete when the application process converts to online submission.  The online submission process would also shift much of the regional chairs' responsibilities to the national office staff.

c.       The regional committee chairs agreed it would be very beneficial to have a meeting once a year with the national committee, either in-person or video conference.

d.      An informational note card will be drafted to include with finalists' and non-finalists' letters for the 2005-06 academic year.  The note will contain include information about the online submission process becoming available.

3.   Adjournment.  The meeting adjourned at noon Sunday , June 26, 2005.
