This application is to be used only for exploratory member institutions reclassifying their entire athletics program or prospective new members joining the NCAA to become an active division I member by entering the provisional process. A separate application form is necessary for existing members that wish to reclassify a single men's or women's sport.
During the 2007 NCAA Convention, the Division II membership adopted Proposal No. 4 which initiates a new member process for institution seeking to become active members of Division II. At minimum, the new member process will take three years to complete. The three year process consists of a minimum of two exploratory years and one provisional year. First, an institution must successfully complete the two-year exploratory period in order to be invited into the provisional period. Secondly, the move from the provisional period into active membership shall be determined upon the final approval of the Membership Committee and the institutions readiness for active membership.
It is also important to note that the Division II Membership Committee has recommended that a fee of $24,000 accompany the application to the exploratory period and a fee of $12,000 be charged to institutions for each year subsequent to the initial two-year exploratory period.
Finally, the application for Division II membership is currently available online. All applications and fees for the exploratory period must be received at the national office by June 1, 2007.
