General Information:

The men’s club with 60 teams is UCD’s biggest sports club and enjoys the unique distinction of being the only University Soccer Club in Western Europe competing at the highest level in its country.  UCD play their FAI National League Premier Division home games on Friday nights at 7.45p.m. at Belfield Park.

An extensive scholarship programme is supplemented by a high degree of activity at intermediate and fresher levels and of course the Superleague has become a sporting phenomenon at Belfield.

Trials for first year students are held on the first Saturday of term.  League involvement includes the National League, the Leinster Senior League, the Athletic Union League, the Superleague and the Irish Universities League.  The club also competes in the three Irish Universities Cup competitions as well as the Oscar Traynor Cup.

Sport Scholarships:

According to the University College of Dublin website, Sports Scholarships have been offered at UCD in Soccer since 1979 and in other sports for the past nine years.  The full list of sports where scholarships have been awarded includes Athletics, Badminton. Mens Basket Ball Camogie, Cycling, Ladies’ and Men’s Gaelic Football, Ladies’ and Men’s Golf, Ladies’ and Men’s Hockey, Hurling, Rowing, Rugby, Soccer and Table Tennis.  Sports Scholarships are intended to provide opportunities for the very best young sporting talent to advance their careers in an ideal environment and with suitable competitive opportunities. Sports Scholarships are awarded on an extremely selective basis and are subject to the availability of funds.

There are several important criteria which must be met - academic qualification for a course must be achieved and the recipient of a scholarship must be prepared to commit him/herself to involvement in the respective UCD sports club. The scholarship student must represent UCD and only UCD in competition.  Clubs which offer scholarships compete at a very high level and have to possess the necessary infrastructural components to facilitate a scholarship award. A satisfactory level of academic and sporting progress is essential, if the scholarship is to be renewed on an annual basis.  Sports Scholarships are intended for persons of outstanding sporting ability.

The range of scholarship benefits may include tuition fees, if applicable, maintenance, books, equipment, treatment of injury and travel to national and international competitions.  The value of each Sports Scholarship is assessed on an individual basis by the respective club.

Students wishing to apply for a scholarship in Gaelic Football, Ladies Gaelic Football, Camogie, Hurling, Rugby, Soccer and Men’s Rowing should obtain an application form from the Sports Information Office (see address below).

In the case of other scholarship sports, a detailed curriculum vitae should be compiled by the candidate outlining their sporting achievements to date.  Candidates are asked to outline the details of their CAO application and include contact information on the curriculum vitae. The curriculum vitae should be sent directly to the respective club care of the Sports Information Office.

Final decisions in regard to sports scholarship awards normally rest with the clubs concerned.  When a Sports Scholarship application is received, it is passed on to the respective club for processing.  The UCD Department of Sport has then no further role to play in this processing.

It is important to note that all applicants for sports scholarships must satisfy the academic criteria for entry to University College Dublin and must apply to the CAO in the usual manner.  A sports scholarship award may be applicable to the Diploma in Sports Management Course.
