REPORT OF THE

NCAA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

SUBCOMMITTEE ON GENDER AND DIVERSITY ISSUES

 

 

 

INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.

 

a.                  Use of American Indian Mascots in Intercollegiate Athletics.  Staff reported on the progress of the self-evaluation being conducted by selected institutions and reported that several institutions had made substantial changes.

 

b.                  Confederate Battle Flag update.  Staff provided an update concerning a request from the South Carolina state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to review the moratorium on awarding NCAA-sponsored pre-determined championships to states whose flag includes symbols of the confederacy.  Staff requested written notice from the NAACP but has not received a response.  The NCAA will retain the moratorium on awarding NCAA-sponsored pre-determined championships and other events in the state of South Carolina.

 

c.                   Office for Diversity and Inclusion update.  Staff reported the Office for Diversity and Inclusion search advisory committee selected DHR International to facilitate the national search for a vice-president.  The position will include managing oversight of NCAA strategic plan implementation for the membership and national office related to matters of diversity and inclusion.  The subcommittee, NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics (CWA) and NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC) will serve the office in an advisory capacity.

 

d.                  Report from the CWA.  The committee noted its continued support for the subcommittee’s audit report that includes national office staff demographics information.  At its meeting in January, the committee will address ongoing programming, such as the NCAA Coaches Academy and NACWAA/HERS Institute, aimed at the recruitment, development and retention of women at the coaching and administrative levels in intercollegiate athletics.

 

e.                  Report from the MOIC.  The committee noted its upcoming January agenda includes continued consideration of strategies for ethnic minority hiring at the coaching and administrative levels in intercollegiate athletics, as well as existing programming such as the NCAA Coaches Academy; the Leadership Institutes for Ethnic Minority Females and Males; and the NCAA Fellows Leadership Development Program.
