WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES

 

 

Origin:

 

The United States Collegiate Sports Council (USCSC) began officially in 1967 as the official representative to the International University Sports Federation (FISU).  The USCSC presented its credentials to the General Assembly of FISU at the 1967 Tokyo World University Games and was accepted by the FISU General Assembly as the governing body for the United States in FISU events.

 

Background:

 

  • 1923 – First World University Games (WUG) competition.
  • International University Sports Federation – Founded in 1949

 

-                     organizing power behind the multi-sport events for the winter and summer universiades as well as the World University Championships

 

-                     organized in 30 different sport disciplines

 

  • Distinctiveness of the university sports movement is to gather together tomorrow’s leaders for the development of our future society and symbolize perfect harmony between the virtues of the mind and body

 

Summer Universiade

 

  • Occurs every 2 years
  • Allows student-athletes the opportunity to compete in 10 compulsory sports and 3 optional ones chosen by the organizing committee of the host city
  • 7000 participants from more than 170 countries
  • Compulsory sports include athletics, basketball, fencing, gymnastics, soccer, volleyball, water polo, swimming, diving and tennis

 

Winter Universiade

 

·        Takes place the same year as the Summer Universiade

·        7 compulsory sports and one optional selected by the host city

·        Compulsory sports include alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, snowboarding, figure skating, short track speed skating, ice hockey and biathlon

·        2000 participants from 50 countries

 


World University Championships

 

·        Since early 1960s, World University Championships organized in the years between the Universiades

·        World Championships organized in 30 different sports

·        Participation of more than 4,000 athletes and officials

 

PURPOSE

 

  • Works internationally to group together the university community transcending dissension that divides countries and people
  • Cities that host the events understand the importance of these competitions and the message it sends to the four corners of the world
  • Remarkable expansion that the global university sports movement has experienced in the last decades
  • International University sports movement is an important medium for communication between diverse communities
