SUPPLEMENT NO. 10

DI C/C Cabinet 9/07

REPORT OF THE

NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S AND WOMEN’S

SWIMMING AND DIVING COMMITTEE

ACTION ITEM.

Zone Diving Realignment.

1.   Recommendation.  That the current five-zone alignment (see Attachment A) be reconfigured into a four-zone alignment (see Attachment B), effective for the 2008 championships.  Each of the four zones will receive four automatic allocations.  If realignment is not feasible for 2008, the committee proposes it go into effect in 2009.

2.   Rationale.  The loss of institutions sponsoring diving has created an inequitable situation in the qualifying process to advance to the NCAA championships.  The current Zone D has a high number of allocations in relation to the total number of divers in the zone.  This realignment plan will better balance the number of teams in the zones and address some geographic oddities that create travel concerns.  The plan also will provide outstanding facilities for the newly formed zone.

3.   Estimated Budget Impact.  None.  The NCAA does not pay for zone diving per-diem, travel or lodging expenses.  Some institutions will experience a cost savings due to a reduction in travel expenses.

4.   Student-Athlete Impact.  None.
