REPORT
OF THE
NCAA
DIVISION I WOMEN’S ROWING COMMITTEE
1. ACTION ITEMS.
a. Field
Expansion.
(1) Recommendation. That
the championship field be expanded to 16 full teams effective 2008-09.
(2) Rationale. The committee believes the championship
has elevated the level of competition and therefore, should provide more
opportunities for those institutions to have their full team selected to the
championship. In addition, based on
the bracket size for other team sports with similar sponsorship numbers (26
percent women’s rowing) warrants a bracket size of 16.
(3) Estimated Budget
Impact. $99,000. (Attachment)
$560.00
for additional participant awards
(4) Student-Athlete
Impact. Bracket expansion will
provide more opportunities for student-athletes (e.g. 56) to participate in the
championship. It also will enable
more full teams to participate in the championship which will give more
institutions the opportunity to win a national championship.
b. Championship
Awards.
(1) Recommendation. That the awards given at the
championship for the three events be reduced from top eight finishers to top three
finishers.
(2) Rationale. The committee believes giving the top eight
finishers in each event is too many awards for the championship. There are 344 student-athletes that
participate in the championship and we presently give 284 trophies. The committee believes the number of
awards diminish the value of the accomplishment. The change to top three finishers would
decrease the number of awards to 169 trophies.
(3) Estimated Budget
Impact. There will be a savings
of $14,115.
(4) Student-Athlete
Impact. Fewer student-athletes
would receive awards and it would put a higher value on the awards given.
2. INFORMATIONAL
ITEM.
Selection Announcement. The committee will be announcing the
teams selected to the 2008 NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Championship via
webcast.
