SUPPLEMENT NO. 19

DI C/C Cabinet 9/07

REPORT OF THE

NCAA WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY COMMITTEE

ACTION ITEMS.

1.     Automatic Qualification.

a.       Recommendation.  That the following conferences receive automatic qualification for the 2008 National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Championship: ECAC Hockey League, Hockey East Association and Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

b.       Rationale.  This reflects all eligible conferences.

c.               Estimated Budget Impact.  None.

d.       Student-Athlete Impact.  None.

2.     Quarterfinal Competition.

a.       Recommendation.  That Sunday be eliminated as an option for a quarterfinal competition date.  As a result, schools would still be allowed to choose between a Friday or Saturday competition date.

b.       Rationale.  The committee feels the student-athletes would be at a competitive disadvantage, due to a quick turnaround from a possible Sunday quarterfinal game to a semifinal game on Thursday (the Women’s Frozen Four will move their semifinal date back to Friday in 2009), should their team advance to the Women’s Frozen Four.  Since bracket expansion in 2005 no quarterfinal host has selected Sunday for competition.

c.               Estimated Budget Impact. None.

d.              Student-Athlete Impact. None.

3.     Selection Criteria.

a.       Recommendation.  That the “results during the last 16 games,” be eliminated from the primary team selection criteria.  The following criteria would be used for selections, effective with the 2008 championship:

·        Rating Percentage Index (RPI) [won-lost record (30 percent), opponents winning percentage (24 percent) and opponents’ opponents winning percentage (46 percent)];

·        Head-to-head competition;

·        Results versus common opponents; and

·        Results against teams at .500 or above in the RPI.

b.       Rationale.  The committee feels that while a team’s results in the last 16 games does give some indication as to how well it is performing heading into post-season, there is no weight given to strength of schedule and, therefore, results can vary widely depending on the strength of each conference.

c.       Estimated Budget Impact.  None.

d.       Student-Athlete Impact.  None.
