[NOTE:  Please refer to the report of the Division I Management Council’s April 10, meeting for the actions taken in accordance with the NCAA policy governing the minutes of all Association entities.  While certain items on the committee’s agenda were acted upon at various times throughout the meeting, all final actions within a given topic are combined in the report for convenience of reference.]  

 

The information contained in this document includes only those items that are not contained in the report of the Management Council.  Attachment B, which contained the text of the legislative proposals forwarded to the Board of Directors, was included with the original Management Council report and is available on the NCAA Web site.]

The meeting was called to order on Monday, April 10 at 8:00 a.m. by the chair, Mr. Wellman.  All members noted above were present.

 

 

1.      Opening remarks.  Ron Wellman, as chair, welcomed Dave Roach as a new member of the Management Council along with alternates Dan Beebe representing the Big 12 Conference; Judy MacLeod representing Conference USA; Shane Lyons representing the Atlantic Coast Conference; Sonja Stills representing the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference; Duer Sharp representing the Southwestern Athletic Conference; and Larry Templeton representing the Southeastern Conference.

 

Mr. Wellman also acknowledged the future members of the Management Council: McKinley Boston, New Mexico State University, Western Athletic Conference; Greig Denny, Radford University, Big South Conference; David Langford, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Northeast Conference; Shane Lyons, Atlantic Coast Conference; Judy MacLeod, Conference USA; and Karen Morrison, University of Colorado, Boulder, Big 12 Conference who were in attendance at the meeting as either observers or as alternates.

2.      Report from the Division I Administrative Committee on interim actions. Kate Hickey, Management Council vice chair, presented the report.

 

 

3.      Report of the Championships/Competition Cabinet. Carolyn Schlie Femovich, vice chair of the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, and NCAA Senior Vice President Judy Sweet, presented the cabinet’s report from its February 7 – 8, 2006, meeting. Ms. Schlie Femovich attended the meeting for the cabinet chair Chris Dawson who was unable to attend.

 

 

4.      Report of the Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet. Jacqueline Blackett, chair of the Division I Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet, joined the meeting to present the cabinet’s report from its February 15 – 17, 2006, meeting. Ms. Blackett was joined by NCAA staff member Lynn Holzman.

 

 

5.      Report from the Committee on Academic Performance. Kevin Lennon and Diane Dickman, NCAA staff, presented the report of the Committee on Academic Performance’s ongoing work.

 


 

6.      Initial Eligibility Trends Working Group. Kevin Lennon and Diane Dickman presented an overview of the preliminary work and recommendations of the Initial Eligibility Trends Working Group.  

                                          

 

7.      Update on the status of the Amateurism Clearinghouse. Kevin Lennon, along with NCAA staff members Bill Saum and Dan Calandro who joined the meeting via video conference, provided an update regarding ongoing plans for the NCAA Amateurism Clearinghouse.

 

 

8.      Report of the NCAA/USOC Joint Task Force. Kevin Lennon provided a brief update on a portion of the report of the NCAA/USOC Joint Task Force. 

 

 

9.      Closing Comments. Ms. Hickey, as vice chair, thanked Mr. Wellman on behalf of the Management Council for his hard work and excellent leadership as Management Council chair. In turn, Mr. Wellman thanked the Management Council members for allowing him to serve the group. Additionally, the staff thanked Mr. Wellman along with his fellow Management Council departing members, Gene Bleymaier, R.C. Johnson, Regina Markland, Chris Plonsky, and John Suarez for their service to Division I.

 

 

10.    Adjournment. Mr. Wellman adjourned the meeting at 5:10 p.m. on Monday, April 10, 2006.
