Six Credit-Hour Requirement for a
Student-Athlete
Enrolled in a Post-Baccalaureate or Graduate
Program
1. Credit-Hour Requirement for a Nondegree-Seeking Graduate Student. (I) The committee recommends that the NCAA Division I Management Council amend a previous Council approved official interpretation [Reference: 11/15/06, Item No. 1 – Attachment] to change the application of the second sentence of the interpretation from a confirmation to a determination. The committee agreed that the interpretation was issued in the context of stating it is permissible for a nondegree-seeking graduate student to complete credits that would apply to any graduate-degree program offered by the certifying institution in order to satisfy the six-hour requirement. However, the committee agreed that the underlying requirement that such a student must complete credits that would apply to any graduate degree program (as opposed to credits that would count toward another undergraduate-degree program) to satisfy the six-hour requirement is a determination of the legislation. [References: NCAA Bylaws 14.4.3.1 (fulfillment of credit-hour requirements) and 14.4.3.5 (exceptions to progress-toward-degree rule)]
Recruiting-Person
Days/Men's Basketball
2. Counting
Recruiting-Person Days Subsequent to National Letter of Intent Signing or Other
Written Commitment – Men's Basketball. (I) The committee determined that, in men's
basketball, off-campus recruiting activities involving a prospective
student-athlete who has signed a National Letter of Intent (or signed
acceptance of the institution's written offer of admission and/or financial
aid) must count toward the institution's recruiting-person days limit. [References: Bylaws 13.02.7 (recruiting-person days -
men's basketball) and 13.1.6.8 (contacts subsequent to National Letter of
Intent signing or other written commitment sports other than women's
basketball)]
Recruiting-Person
Days/Women's Basketball
3. Counting
Recruiting-Person Days Subsequent to National Letter of Intent Signing or Other
Written Commitment – Women's Basketball. (I) The committee confirmed that, in women's
basketball, off-campus recruiting activities involving a prospective
student-athlete who has signed a National Letter of Intent (or signed
acceptance of the institution's written offer of admission and/or financial
aid) must count toward the institution's recruiting-person days limit. [References: Bylaws 13.02.8 (recruiting-person days -
women's basketball) and 13.1.6.8.1 (contacts subsequent to National Letter of

3. Hosting, Sponsoring, Conducting or Evaluating Portions of Events that Include Athletics Testing Activities. (I) The committee confirmed the following regarding hosting, sponsoring, conducting or evaluating portions of events that include activities devoted to agility, flexibility, speed or strength tests for prospective student-athletes:
a. In football, it is not permissible for coaches to attend any portion of a scholastic or nonscholastic event that includes activities devoted to agility, flexibility, speed or strength tests for prospective student-athletes regardless of whether or not the coach observes the portion of the event devoted to such activities.
b. A member institution or conference may not host, sponsor or conduct any portion of an event that also includes agility, flexibility, speed or strength tests for prospective student-athletes conducted at a separate location in any sport. For example, an institution is not permitted to host the competition portion of an event that also includes flexibility, speed or strength test for prospective student-athletes that take place at an off-campus location.
[References: Bylaws 13.1.8.9.4 (scholastic and nonscholastic activities - football), and 13.11.1.5 (tryout events) and a staff interpretation (2/21/07, item 1), which has been archived]
