NCAA DIVISION I STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) submits the following report from its January 6-8, 2007, meeting. This report includes only those items that were not included in the SAAC's report that was distributed on site during the January NCAA Division I Management Council meeting.

·              None.

INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.

1.                  NCAA Office for Diversity and Inclusion.  Charlotte Westerhaus, vice president for diversity and inclusion, provided an overview of diversity and inclusion’s mission and requested feedback related to the recently-created diversity and inclusion publication.  Given the group’s commitment to diversity and inclusion within the national SAAC strategic plan, they welcome the continued opportunity to assist with diversity and inclusion’s efforts.

2.                  Corporate Partners and the NCAA.  Greg Shaheen, senior vice president for basketball and business strategies, updated the group regarding efforts within the Association to further discuss and define the relationships with, and the role of corporate partners within intercollegiate athletics.

3.         GOALS/SCORE Studies Update.  Tom Paskus, NCAA principal research scientist, and Jack McArdle, University of Southern California professor of psychology, updated SAAC regarding the preliminary findings associated with the GOALS (Growth, Opportunities, Aspirations and Learning of Students in College) survey, and SCORE (Study of College Outcomes and Recent Experiences) study.  SCORE focused on students who graduated from high school in 1994 and included more than 8,000 respondents, while GOALS focused on current student-athletes in all three divisions and across most sports and included more than 20,000 respondents.  It was noted the research staff will continue to provide the membership and SAAC additional information from the data which will assist in evaluating and assessing issues involving the student-athlete experience and well-being.

4.         Division I Subdivisions.  Matt Burgemeister, NCAA intern, updated SAAC members regarding the implementation of new Division I subdivisions (Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision and Division I Subdivision) to replace I-A, I-AA and I-AAA designations within Division I as of December 15, 2006.

5.         Upcoming Teleconference.  SAAC members were asked to hold Sunday, April 8 for spring teleconference.  However, following the NCAA 2007 Convention, it was agreed that the teleconference should be held at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time March 25, 2007.
