Title: Baseball Academic Enhancement Working Group

Description:  This session will provide a status report on the efforts of the Baseball Academic Enhancement Working Group.  In April, the Division I Board of Directors instructed the baseball community to develop proposals to address concerns regarding academic performance in baseball by reviewing such factors as the current one-time transfer exception, financial aid limits, playing and practice season limits and the overall culture of the sport. The Board indicated an intention to review the impact of any changes resulting from the baseball community’s proposal two years after the submission of a comprehensive plan in April 2007 to determine whether additional changes to baseball (including a significant reduction in games) would be warranted to help enhance the overall level of academic performance in that sport.

Panel: Eric Hartung, NCAA; Brad Hostetter, NCAA; Damani Leech, NCAA; and Ron Wellman, Wake Forest University.

Title:  Recent NCAA Research on the Lives of Division I Student-Athletes:  Findings from the GOALS and SCORE studies

Description:  This session will provide data from the Study of College Outcomes and Recent Experiences (SCORE) and the Growth, Opportunities, Aspirations and Learning of Students in college (GOALS) study.  SCORE is a study of former student-athletes who applied to the IEC in 1994.  Topics will include academic attainment, career trajectories, health and well-being, and satisfaction with their college experience.  GOALS data examines similar issues of current student-athletes in addition to issues related to time commitments.  Together, these studies represent the NCAA’s most ambitious effort to understand the lives and experiences of student-athletes on campus.
