DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIPS COMMITTEE
1. ACTION ITEMS.
Sport Committee Appointments.
Recommendation. The committee approved the following appointments:
Baseball – Stuart Fritz, coach at Hope College, as the Mideast region representative.
Men’s Basketball – Kevin McHugh, director of athletics at the College of New Jersey, as the Atlantic region representative and Richard Reynolds, director of athletics/coach at Otterbein College as the Great Lakes region representative.
Women’s Basketball – Pam Wojnar, director of athletics/coach at Rosemont College as the Mid-Atlantic region representative and Rachel Madsen, coach at the California Institute of Technology as the West region representative.
Football – John Neese, director of athletics at Hardin-Simmons University, as the South region representative and Tim Rucks, coach at Carthage College as the North region representative.
Men’s Golf – Christopher Ragsdale, director of athletics at Elmherst College, as the Golf District 5 representative.
Women’s Golf – Louise O’Neal, director of athletics at Wellesley College, as the Region 1 representative.
Men’s Lacrosse – Mike Caravana, coach at Denison University as the West region representative.
Women’s Lacrosse – Anne Van Heuven, coach at Ithaca College as the New York region representative.
Men’s Soccer – Vernon Mummert, director of athletics at Wabash College as the Great Lakes region representative and Michael Mooney, coach at State University College at Geneseo as the Northeast region representative.
Women’s Soccer – Julia Dunn, director of athletics at Whitman College as the West region representative, and Steve Quinones, coach, University of Southern Maine representing the New England region.
Softball – Judy Sherman, director of athletics at Pacific University as the West region representative and Jud Damon, director of athletics at Savannah College of Art & Design as the Atlantic region representative.
Men’s and Women’s Tennis – James Berrigan, coach at Babson College as the Men’s Northeast region representative; Scott Thielke, coach at Kenyon College as the Women’s Central region representative; and, Julie Greenwood, coach at Williams College as the Women’s Northeast region representative.
Men’s and Women’s Track and Field – James Penington, coach at Springfield College as the New England region representative and Troy Engle, coach at Occidental College as the West region representative.
Women’s Volleyball – Hilda Arrechea, coach at Skidmore College as the New York region representative and Kate Witte, senior woman administrator/coach at Ohio Northern University as the Great Lakes region representative.
2. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.
Sport Committee Recommendation (Men’s and Women’s Soccer).
As a point of information, subsequent to the April, 2001 Management Council supplement, the Division III Championships Committee approved a recommendation from the men’s and women's soccer committee’s to conduct both championships on similar dates with the semifinals and finals concluding on Thanksgiving weekend. Note: The Men’s Soccer Championship has been conducted on those dates for the last several years. The Women’s Championship will be conducted on similar dates beginning with the 2002 championship.
