COMMITTEE
INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.
a. Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males.
The committee reviewed the first session of the NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males, including workshop materials and participant biographies. The content format of the session was consistent with the program’s mission and met the needs of the participants. The committee will review session evaluations from participants and administrators and finalize the content for session two, Human Resource Management, by August 15.
b.
NCAA Football
Study.
The committee received a progress report from the subcommittee to review diversity issues in NCAA football. The committee accepted a revised timeline to collect research data and conduct focus groups. It was noted that a final report will be submitted to the Football Oversight Committee in October 2002.
c.
Issue of
Eliminating the Use of American Indian Mascot Nicknames.
Per the request of the Executive Committee, the committee reviewed and discussed the use of American Indian mascots by NCAA member institutions. The committee agreed that the use of American Indian mascots in intercollegiate athletics must be a concern to the NCAA. The committee determined that it will develop a briefing report on these historical and complex issues to be submitted to the Executive Committee Subcommittee on Gender and Diversity Issues. A final report will be presented for the Subcommittee’s August 2002 meeting.

Conference Officials
Survey. [Attachment]
The committee reviewed survey results from the 2000 conference official study. The committee agreed to distribute the results to the membership.
e.
Partnerships with
Constituent Groups.
The committee identified constituent groups (e.g., Native American Sports Council) to discuss partnerships and collaborative efforts to increase opportunities for ethnic minorities and women in intercollegiate athletics.
