DIVISION III PLAYING AND PRACTICE SEASONS SUBCOMMITTEE

 

 

1. ACTION ITEMS.

 

a. Proposal No. 1-8 – Playing and Practice Seasons – Definitions.

 

Recommendation. Refer to Interpretations and Legislation Committee. Expressed support for the concept and noted concern with the elimination of the terms “another institution.”

 

b. Proposal No. 1-9 – Playing and Practice Seasons – Basketball – Preseason Practice Activity.

 

(1) Recommendation. Oppose the proposal.

 

(2) Rationale.

 

?        Concern that workouts will be more than “voluntary” (underlying pressures to attend).

?        Impact on facilities.

?        Extension of the season.

?        Increased time demands on student-athletes.

?        Inconsistent treatment of student-athletes within the sport.

?        Additional time demand on multisport athletes.

 

c. Proposal No. 1-10 – Playing and Practice Seasons – First Permissible Contest and Practice Date – Football.

 

(1) Recommendation. No position.

 

(2) Rationale.

 

?        Special interest legislation.

?        Permissive legislation.

 

d. Proposal No. 1-11 – Three-Day Noncontact, Conditioning Practice Period – Football (Shoulder Pads).

 

(1) Recommendation. Refer to Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sport Committee.

 

(2) Rationale. Subcommittee opposes unless new or additional information is provided.

e. Proposal No. 1-12 – Playing and Practice Seasons – Football – Nontraditional Segment.

 

(1) Recommendation. No position.

 

(2) Rationale.

 

?        Equity among sports – more consistent treatment of football student-athletes.

?        Impact on multisport athletes.

?        Staffing implications (e.g., athletic trainers).

?        Increased use of facilities.

 

 

f. Proposal No. 1-13 – Playing and Practice Seasons – Lacrosse – Nontraditional Segment.

 

Recommendation. Support the proposal.

 

g. Proposal No. 1-14 – Contest Exemption – Men’s Volleyball – Molten Championship.

 

(1) Recommendation. Support the proposal until a Division III Men’s Volleyball Championship is established. Expressed concern with the immediate effective date and recommend the sponsors consider August 2002 implementation.

 

(2) Rationale. The immediate effective date could impact on existing institutional schedules.

 

h. Proposal No. 1-15 – Championships – Minimum Number of Institutions – Exception – Men’s Volleyball.

 

Recommendation. No position. Refer to Championships Committee. Expressed concern with the proposal and recommended the sponsors address the following:

 

?        Clarify effective date for establishment of a championship.

?        Clarify the intent of minimum sponsorship.

 


i. Proposal No. 1-16 – Championships – Men’s Volleyball.

 

Recommendation. No position. Refer to Championships Committee. Support in concept the establishment of a Division III Men’s Volleyball Championship, noting budget impact and effective date. Recommend the sponsors consider a delayed effective date of August 1, 2006.

 

 

2. INFORMATIONAL ITEM.

 

 

Length of Playing and Practice Seasons. Deferred to October. Request staff develop a chart identifying each sport’s playing and practice season, including total weeks beginning with preseason and concluding with the national championship.
