REPORT OF THE

NCAA COMMITTEE ON COMPETITIVE SAFEGUARDS AND

MEDICAL ASPECTS OF SPORTS

INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.

a.            Protective Eyewear in Women’s Lacrosse.  During its December 2001 meeting, the committee continued its review of the issue of mandatory use of eye protection in women’s lacrosse as soon as practicable.  It noted issues still remained regarding practicable eyewear but that no information had been produced to modify its original recommendation.  The committee noted progress in the development of eye protection that met the playing and safety specifications recommended by the women’s lacrosse community.  Subsequent to this meeting, United States Lacrosse agreed to begin studying officials’ calls associated with dangerous play involving the head and resulting in a yellow or red card.  Upon completion, this survey would create a second quantitative measure (along with injury rates) of dangerous play.  Selected committee members discussed these issues, as well as feedback from the January 2002 Women’s United States Lacrosse Board meeting, on a February conference call of the NCAA Protective Eyewear Project Team.

b.            DIVISION I ONLY -- Health and Safety Issue Presentation to Division I Football Study Oversight Committee (FSOC).  On February 1, Bryan Smith, chair, NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports, appeared as part of a panel to discuss health and safety issues.  The written report provided to FSOC identified five major health and injury issues: heat illness, emergency care and coverage, supplement use, injury surveillance application and smokeless tobacco use.  The actual panel discussion focused on “voluntary” practices and the complications presented by supplement use, heat illness and lack of prudent medical coverage.  It is anticipated that the committee will be requested to provide specific recommendations for consideration at a future FSOC meeting.
