NCAA COMMITTEE ON WOMEN'S ATHLETICS
AND MINORITY OPPORTUNITIES AND INTERESTS COMMITTEE
INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.
a.
Search Process for NCAA
President. The
committees discussed the search process for the next NCAA President. Both committees agreed that it was
important for the search committee to be diverse, including women and ethnic
minorities. It was also noted that
the pool of candidates for the position must be diverse and the composition of
the search committee will significantly impact the diversity of the candidate
pool. Eugene Marshall and Marilyn
McNeil will forward a letter to the chair of the NCAA Executive Committee
outlining the committees’ concerns.
b.
Vision
and Mission Statements for Division I.
The committees reviewed the NCAA
Division I Board of Directors’ task force report that will guide the Board’s
strategic planning efforts. The
committees noted that the mission statement and guiding principles do not
include language regarding gender equity.
It was suggested that a letter be forwarded to the Board of Directors
requesting that the mission statement and guiding principles include a
statement regarding the importance of diversity and gender equity pursuant to
Constitution 2.2.2. Eugene
Marshall and Marilyn McNeil will draft a letter to the chair of the Board of
Directors to provide the committees’ observation and feedback.
c. Advanced Diversity Education Workshops
to Address Issues Related to Race, Gender and Sexual Orientation. The subcommittee charged with selecting the consultants
to develop curriculum, design materials and facilitate advanced diversity
education workshops provided an update regarding the in-person presentation of
the three finalists. Full-Circle
Diversity/Critical Measures was selected to develop all three diversity
modules. The subcommittee also
noted the new workshops will complement the Association’s existing diversity
education workshop and will debut during the 2003 NCAA Convention.
d. Joint Budget Request. The committees reviewed and approved the joint
2002-03/2003-04 budget request.

Future Joint Meetings. The committees discussed the regularity of their joint meetings
and noted that more frequent joint meetings will improve communication and
cooperation between the committees.
The committees agreed to continue meeting as a group each January and
begin meeting jointly every other fall to develop the joint budget.
