REPORT OF THE

DIVISION III CONVENTION-PLANNING SUBCOMMITTEE

 

 

1.      ACTION ITEMS.

 

a.      Draft 2003 NCAA Convention Schedule.  (Attachment A)

 

(1)     Recommendation.  Review the draft Convention schedule noting:

 

(a)     Earlier start time (11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) for Joint Management Council/Presidents Council Luncheon to accommodate attendance at Association-wide menu sessions.

 

(b)     Later start time and limited topics for Association-wide and divisional menu sessions.

 

(c)     Later start time (noon to 1:30 p.m.) for Divisions II and III joint CEO session to accommodate attendance at conference meetings.

 

(d)     Limited time (1:30 to 3:30 p.m.) and one topic for the Division III Forum.

 

(2)     Budget Impact.  None.

 

b.      Possible Topics -- 2003 Convention.  (Attachment B)

 

(1)     Recommendation.  Review, provide input and prioritize specific topics for Association-wide menu sessions, Division III forum and Division III business session.

 

(2)     Rationale.  The subcommittee suggested several topics to ensure that the Convention includes:  discussion sessions that bind the Association; pertinent key professional development sessions; key governance/committee issues; involvement of chief executive officers; interaction and student-athlete oriented issues.

 

(3)     Budget Impact.  TBD.

 

 

2.      INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.

 

a.      2002 Convention Questionnaire Results (Attachment C is not available online).  The subcommittee reviewed the results of the Convention questionnaire, noting:

 

(1)     Total of 370 responses (CEO=30; FAR=48; AD=177; Other campus administrators=92; Commissioners=20; Other=3).  The total responses is down from 420 in 2001 and CEO attendance continues to be very low.

 

(2)     Strong support for three-day format (Saturday-Monday).

 

(3)     Strong support for Association-wide educational sessions.  Key topics included: Legislative rules and workshops; violence in sports; legal issues and facility management.

 

(4)     Positive response with Indianapolis site.

 

(5)     Future sites of interest:  San Diego; San Antonio; Orlando and Indianapolis.

 

(6)   Strong support for Division III business session format including topics in the morning and afternoon voting.

 

b.      New Members.  The subcommittee welcomed new members: 

 

(1)     Douglas N. Hastad, chancellor, University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, Management Council representative.

 

(2)     Catherine Schweitzer, director of athletics, Springfield College (NAD3AA  representative).

 

c.      Chair.  The subcommittee re-elected Susan Bassett, director of athletics, William Smith College, chair.

 

d.      2003 Convention Timetable.  The subcommittee reviewed the planning timetable:

 

April                       Preliminary Division III schedule and programs/session topics forwarded to Management Council and Presidents Council.

 

May/June               Programs/session topics developed and forwarded to Management Council/Presidents Council.

 

July/August             Recommendations reviewed and approved by Management and Presidents Councils.

 

Sep./early Oct.       Subcommittee review of Management Council/Presidents Council action related to program/session recommendations; discuss


involvement and communication with affiliated groups and committee structure.

 

Oct. 21-31             Management and Presidents Councils final review of schedule/programs.

 

November 4-8       Communicate with affiliate groups, committee structure and staff liaisons.

 

December 6           Outline/content of presentation, identification of participants due.

 

 

December 16-20    Subcommittee conference call – status update; preparation of presentation outline/content by committee structure and affiliate groups.

 

December 13         Draft of multimedia presentation due.

 

January 2                Final draft of remarks and Division III web site posting due.
