DIVISION III CONVENTION-PLANNING SUBCOMMITTEE

Summary of Recommendations

1.

ISSUE:

Draft 2002 NCAA Convention Schedule.

Subcommittee’s Recommendation:

 

Review the draft Convention schedule.

Management Council Action:

 

Approved the 2002 draft Convention schedule.

2.

ISSUE:

Possible Topics -- 2002 Convention.

Subcommittee’s Recommendation:

 

Review, provide input and prioritize specific topics for Association-wide menu sessions, Division III forum and Division III business session.

Management Council Action:

 

Recommended the following priorities for 2002 Convention topics:

 

a.

Division III business session:

 

 

(1)

Financial Aid -- Compliance, Audit and Enforcement Process.

 

 

(2)

Amateurism -- Deregulation.

 

 

(3)

Championships -- Update -- Automatic-Qualifier Principles; Individual/Team Sport Automatic-Qualifier Process; Site Selection; and the Student-Athlete Experience.

 

b.

Referred the following topics for the Division III forum to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for its top two recommendations:

 

 

(1)

Sexual Harassment.

 

 

(2)

Sportsmanship -- Pragmatic approach to Fans and Participants.

 

 

(3)

CHAMPS/Lifeskills in Division III.

 

 

(4)

How to Start a Good Conflict: Conflict Resolution Skills.

 

 

(5)

Across the Divide -- Intergenerational Issues and Interactions.

 

c.

Possible Association-wide topics.

 

 

(1)

Sexual Orientation.

 

 

(2)

Legal Implications -- Transportation of Student-Athletes and Staff; and Hazing.

 

 

(3)

Recommend additional program -- How to Handle Difficult People.

ITEMS OF INFORMATION

1.

ISSUE:

2001 Convention questionnaire results.

Subcommittee’s Action:

 

The subcommittee reviewed the results of the Convention questionnaire, noting:

 

(1) Total of 412 responses (CEO=54; FAR=50; AD=184; SWA=44; Associate/Assistant AD=38; commissioner=18).

 

(2) Strong support for comparable date (January) and three-day format (Saturday-Monday).

 

(3) Support for Association-wide sessions, although respondents prefer topics critical to Division III. (Association-wide sessions should include issues that "bind" all three divisions).

 

(4) Strong interest in topics of sportsmanship and legal issues.

 

(5) Significant "undecided" response by CEOs regarding interest in attending the Convention. (Subcommittee recommends continuing to conduct a specific CEO discussion session with the possible addition of divisional breakout sessions.)

The subcommittee welcomed new members:

 

(1) Sheila Brown, director of athletics, College of St. Catherine.

 

(2) Daniel DiBiasio, president, Wilmington College (Presidents Council representative).

 

(3) Travis Feezell, director of athletics, Whitman College.

 

(4) Thornton Shelton, assistant director of athletics, Washington University (MO).

 

(5) Jeanie Watson, president, Nebraska Wesleyan University (Presidents Council representative).

Accepted the information.

Subcommittee’s Action:

 

The subcommittee elected Susan Bassett, director of athletics, William Smith College, chair.

4.

ISSUE:

2002 Convention timetable.

Subcommittee’s Action:

 

The subcommittee endorsed the planning timetable:

 

April

Preliminary Division III schedule forwarded to Management Council and Presidents Council.

 

May/June

Programs/session topics developed and forwarded to Management Council/Presidents Council.

 

July/August

Recommendations reviewed and approved by Management and Presidents Councils.

 

Sep./early Oct.

Subcommittee review of Management Council/Presidents Council action related to program/session recommendations; discuss involvement and communication with affiliated groups and committee structure.

 

Oct. 22-Nov. 1

Management and Presidents Councils final review of schedule/programs.

 

November 5-9

Communicate with affiliate groups, committee structure and staff liaisons.

 

December 7

Outline/content of presentation, identification of participants due.

 

Dec. 12-19
