DIVISION III NOMINATING COMMITTEE

Summary of Recommendations

 

ACTION ITEMS -- MANAGEMENT COUNCIL ONLY.

1.

ISSUE:

Committee appointments.

Committee’s Recommendation:

 

Approve appointments to the following committees:

 

a.

Division III Interpretations and Legislation Committee – Travis Feezell, Whitman College.

 

b.

Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Committee – Marjorie Willadsen, Buena Vista University.

Management Council Action:

 

Approved the appointments.

2.

ISSUE:

Nominating Committee composition (NCAA Bylaw 21.8.6.8.1).

Committee’s Recommendation:

 

Adopt noncontroversial legislation to amend Bylaw 21.8.6.8.1 to revise the requirement of four former officers or Management Council members to two former officers or Council members, creating two additional at-large positions.

Management Council Action:

 

Agreed to adopt noncontroversial legislation effective January 2002 and through attrition to revise the requirement for four former officers or Management Council members to two former Council members, creating two additional at-large positions.

3.

ISSUE:

Nominating Committee chair (Bylaw 21.8.6.8.2).

Committee’s Recommendation:

 

Adopt noncontroversial legislation to delete Bylaw 21.8.6.8.2, which requires a former NCAA officer, or current or former Management Council member, to serve as chair.

Management Council Action:

 

Agreed to adopt noncontroversial legislation.

 4.

ISSUE:

Championship Committee composition (Bylaw 21.8.6.2.1).

Committee’s Recommendation:

 

Adopt noncontroversial legislation to amend Bylaw 21.8.6.2.1 to reduce the number of Management Council representatives on the committee from five to three members.

Management Council Action:

 

Agreed to adopt noncontroversial legislation effective January 2002 and through attrition to reduce the number of Management Council representatives on the committee from five to three members.

5.

ISSUE:

Management Council representation (Bylaw 21.8.2.5).

Committee’s Recommendation:

 

Adopt noncontroversial legislation to amend Bylaw 21.8.2.5 -- composition requirements of general committees with Management Council representation -- to state that Management Council representatives will serve as ex officio, nonvoting members and be excluded from the total composition requirements for Division III general committees.

Management Council Action:

 

Agreed to adopt noncontroversial legislation, pending review and feedback from Division III committees.

6.

ISSUE:

Student-athlete representation on Association-wide and general committees.

Committee’s Recommendation:

 

Sponsor noncontroversial legislation to amend Bylaw 21.1.2.1.1 (CSMAS), Bylaw 21.1.5.1.1 (MOIC), Bylaw 21.1.7.1.1 (OSLC), Bylaw 21.1.9.1.1 (Research), Bylaw 21.1.10.1.1 (SEC), Bylaw 21.1.12.1.1 (CWA), Bylaw 21.8.6.2.1 (Championships), Bylaw 21.8.6.5.1 (Financial Aid and Awards) and Bylaw 21.8.6.6.1 (Interpretations and Legislation) to indicate that student-athletes serving on Association-wide and Division III general committees should be appointed from the Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Agreed to sponsor noncontroversial legislation.

 

ITEMS OF INFORMATION

1.

ISSUE:

Conference commissioner representation on committees.

Committee’s Action:

 

The committee discussed the valued role of conference commissioners on Division III and Association-wide committees. It was clarified that conference commissioners are classified as administrators; to be eligible for committee service, they must meet the on the staff requirement of bylaw 21.8.1.1. Currently six conference commissioners serve on NCAA committees.

Policies and procedures.

Committee’s Action:

 

The committee revised and updated its policies and procedures.

Accepted the information.
