ISSUE:

Women's Lacrosse Protective Eyewear.

Committee’s Recommendation:

The Women’s Lacrosse Protective Eyewear Project Team was established following the July 2000 Management Council recommendation "To mandate some form of eye protection in women's lacrosse as soon as practicable." The team consists of representatives from the three divisional sports committees, U.S. Women's Lacrosse Association, the Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sport, NCAA legal counsel, and NCAA staff liaisons has been formed to review the issue of eye injuries and eye protection in intercollegiate women’s lacrosse. The goals of the project team are to:

  • Consider current recommendation and directives from divisional Management Councils;
  • Identify barriers to achieving competitive safeguards committee recommendation; and
  • Develop plan and timetable for addressing barriers.

The project team had its initial discussion December 11, 2000, via a conference call.

Management Council Action:

Accepted the information. The Council recommended that the committee consider "recommending" protective equipment as opposed to "require" based on review of data and findings and to support and assist in the development of quality protective eyewear equipment, if necessary.
