NCAA COMMITTEE ON SPORTSMANSHIP AND ETHICAL CONDUCT

Summary of Recommendations

ACTION ITEM -- MANAGEMENT COUNCIL ONLY

1.

ISSUE:

Creation of Speakers Bureau for Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Issues.

Committee’s Recommendation:

 

Requests input from the Management Council regarding a proposal to create and fund an NCAA speakers bureau for sportsmanship and ethical conduct requests, beginning 2002-03.

Management Council Action:

 

  • Supported the proposal in concept to create or expand existing NCAA speakers bureau with guaranteed funding to address sportsmanship and ethical conduct issues.
  • The proposal should include an appropriate administrative structure (i.e., sportsmanship and ethical conduct staff) to support the concept.

ITEMS OF INFORMATION

1.

ISSUE:

Budget Proposals for the 2001-02 Academic Year.

Committee’s Recommendation:

 

The following items/projects will be submitted for the 2001-02 budget process: 1) the creation of two videos, one that addresses hazing and the other on sportsmanship and ethical conduct; 2) funds to cover the start-up costs for a videoconference originating from the national office to view the sportsmanship and ethical conduct video; 3) packaging and distribution of the sportsmanship action kit. The kit will be completed by January 2001 but is only partially funded in 2000-01.

ISSUE:

Sportsperson of the Year Award Winners.

Committee’s Recommendation:

 

Selected Safiya Ingram, a women’s track and field student-athlete from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, and George Audue, a men’s track and field student-athlete from Pennsylvania State University, as the Division I Sportsperson of the Year Award winners. Lindsey Morton, a women’s tennis student-athlete at Ferrum College, was also selected as the Division III female Sportsperson of the Year Award winner.

3.

ISSUE:

Itinerary for the May 2001 Meeting.

Committee’s Recommendation:

 

The committee will invite representatives from the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA), collegiate baseball and various officiating organizations to its May meeting to discuss sportsmanship and ethical conduct issues. The committee will invite the president of each college division of the CCA to attend.

4.

ISSUE:

Gambling Oversight.

Committee’s Recommendation:

 

The committee received a report regarding gambling initiatives that included a review of the following topics: 1) a study to be conducted by the NCAA into the gambling habits of student-athletes; 2) federal legislation on gambling; 3) new student-athlete reinstatement sanctions for student-athletes in Division I found to have been involved in sports wagering; 4) the development of new gambling posters, and videos; and 5) background checks for men’s and women’s basketball officials.
