NCAA COMMITTEE ON WOMEN'S ATHLETICS

 

Summary of Recommendations

 

 

ACTION ITEMS – MANAGEMENT COUNCIL ONLY

 

1.

ISSUE:

Committee on Women’s Athletics Diversity.

Committee Recommendation:

 

That the Council give consideration to diversity when appointing future CWA members.

Management Council Action:

 

Forwarded the recommendation to the Division III Nominating Committee.

 

2.

ISSUE:

Identification of Emerging Sport – Women’s Rugby.

Committee Recommendation:

 

Identify rugby as an emerging sport for women.

Management Council Action:

 

 Sponsored legislation to identify rugby as an emerging sport.

 

 

ITEMS OF INFORMATION

 

1.

ISSUE:

Emerging Sports Web Page.

Committee Action:

 

The committee reviewed an update on the development of an NCAA Web page for emerging sports.  It was noted that NCAA staff receives numerous inquiries for information about emerging sports.  The Web page will include a list of emerging sports, a link to applicable sports organizations and governing bodies and the definition of an emerging sport developed by CWA.  The Web page will also permit the user to print a list of member institutions that sponsor each emerging sport.

2.

ISSUE:

Homophobia Educational Initiatives Update. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee received an update on the various homophobia educational initiatives that have been conducted (NCAA Convention) and are planned for the three management councils, student-athlete advisory committees and student-athlete leadership conference.  The committee received very positive feedback on the Convention session and noted that 150 people attended.  However, several committee members received comments that some

Convention participants did not attend the session for fear of being labeled a homosexual.  The committee suggests that a session on homophobia be a general session at the 2003 Convention to alleviate the “fear factor” and encourage participants to attend.

Accepted the information, noting the value of the NCAA News article on the subject.

 

3.

ISSUE:

University of Minnesota Discussion. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee received an update on the University of Minnesota discussions regarding combining the men’s and women’s athletics programs.

Accepted the information.

 

4.

ISSUE:

NCAA Woman of the Year Dinner.

Committee Action:

 

 The committee requested that staff gather information to identify candidates for the 2002 selection committee.  Jacqueline McWilliams was recommended as chair of the selection committee.  The committee also requested statistics regarding the 2001 applicant pool.  Nomination forms will be available in June.  The national office, conference and campus SAACs will be requested to announce and promote the availability of nomination forms.

 

Management Council Action:

 

Accepted the information, recommending notification on the NAD3AA and Division III commissioners listserve.

 

5.

ISSUE:

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injuries Among Females. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee received a report on the work of the Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports regarding ACL injury rates among female athletes.

Accepted the information.

 


6.

ISSUE:

Conference Senior Woman Administrators (SWA). 

Committee Action:

 

The committee requested staff to obtain a list of all conference SWAs.  Additionally, the committee agreed to send a letter to each conference commissioner to inform them of  the executive level institute sponsored by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators.

7.

ISSUE:

National Office SWA Job Description. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee received an update from the national office SWA regarding the SWA job description.  No changes have occurred since the previous update.

8.

ISSUE:

National Office Senior Vice-President. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee discussed its continued strong interest in the appointment of a female senior vice-president at the national office and related work of the Executive Committee Subcommittee on Gender and Diversity Issues.  The committee agreed to continue to voice its position on the issue, given the upcoming change in leadership.

9.

ISSUE:

NCAA Presidential Search. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee agreed to write a letter to the Executive Committee chair requesting careful consideration of gender and minority representation on the NCAA presidential search committee, as well as in the final pool of applicants.  Additionally, the letter will request that the selected candidate has a demonstrated commitment to gender and ethnic diversity.  [Note:  A joint letter will be sent from CWA and MOIC.]

10.

ISSUE:

National Office Gender Equity Plan Draft. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee received a report from the national office SWA.  The national office conducted focus groups that provided background information necessary to develop and conduct a confidential survey of all employees.  The survey had a 66 percent response rate.  Staff is in the process of analyzing the data and culling critical information to assist with the development of the plan.

11.

ISSUE:

National Office Employee Benefits. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee received an update regarding national office domestic partner benefits as part of the Association’s employee benefits package.  National office leadership continues to review the issue and is working with insurance carries to gather information.  The committee requested an update for its July meeting.

12.

ISSUE:

Pregnancy Language in Sports Medicine Handbook. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee received a report and noted that the Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports intends to revise the pregnancy language in the 2002 handbook.

13.

ISSUE:

Executive Committee Subcommittee on Gender and Diversity Issues – Five-Year Audit Report. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee noted that the five-year audit report was updated for the October 2001 Subcommittee meeting.  The committee requested that staff update the document and highlight those items that have yet to be addressed.  The committee intends to utilize the audit report to update its strategic plan during its July meeting.

ISSUE:

Editorial Revisions Based on Adoption of Emerging Sports Legislative Changes. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee reviewed the recent legislative changes and requested a full review by staff to ensure appropriate incorporation of editorial revisions consistent with the changes.

15.

ISSUE:

SWA Brochure. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee reviewed and suggested additional edits to the final draft of the brochure.  The brochure will be available during the spring of 2002.

MOIC Report. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee reviewed the report of the MOIC.

Accepted the information.

 

17.

ISSUE:

CWA List of Accomplishments. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee reviewed its updated chronological list of achievements.

Management Council Action:

 

Accepted the information.

 


18.

ISSUE:

Gender Equity Plans for Divisions II and III. 

Committee Action:

 

The committee is in the process of collecting and reviewing information regarding gender equity requirements as part of the Division III Institutional Self-study Guide and the Division II Compliance Review Blueprint Program.  The committee is considering the inclusion of mechanisms for strengthening the gender equity plan requirements in each division.  The committee will review the issue in greater detail during its July meeting.
