INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.

Association-wide

a. Woman of the Year Selection Committee. The committees discussed the composition requirements for the Woman of the Year Selection Committee. The committees noted the current composition is that a member of the MOIC OR a staff member from a Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) must be a member of the selection committee. The committees formally agreed that the criteria should be updated so that a member of the MOIC and a staff member from an HBCU will be members of the selection committee. The CWA agreed to update its standard operating procedures to reflect this change.

b.                  Girls Sports Initiatives. The committees discussed whether funding for the Girls Sports Initiatives should be reduced. The committees discussed whether the program has been successful in introducing ethnic-minority girls to nontraditional sports, which was the intent of the program when it was developed in 1998. The committees tabled until January further discussion regarding the initiative and the allocation of grant funds.

c.                   Coaches Academies. The committees discussed professional development opportunities for coaches. The MOIC gave an overview of its Coaches Academy and noted that the first element of the academy will take place January 2-4, 2004, in conjunction with the American Football Coaches Association Convention. The CWA gave an overview of the Coaches Academy conducted by the WinStar Foundation in conjunction with NACWAA/HERS. The committees determined that each group will seek $250,000 of baseline funds in the upcoming budget request process so that both academies can continue to operate separately.

d. 2004-05 and 2005-06 MOIC and CWA Budget Requests. The committees discussed its joint prioritized budget request for the 2004-05 and 2005-06 academic years. The committees agreed to support professional development for coaches. The committee also identified initiatives related to educating student-athletes through the CHAMPS/Life Skills program, promotion of Title IX and increasing the number of national office internship opportunities. The committees agreed to review the 2004-05 and 2005-06 budget requests again in January 2004 in light of the established strategic priorities of the Association to be presented later this year.
