REPORT OF THE

NCAA DIVISION III MANAGEMENT COUNCIL

ACADEMIC ISSUES SUBCOMMITTEE

1. ACTION ITEMS.

a. Waiver of NCAA Bylaw 14.1.8.2.2.1.3 (Learning-Disabled and Handicapped Student-Athletes).

(1)         Recommendation. Waive the 12-hour requirement for three learning-disabled student-athletes. [See addendum.]

(2)         Rationale. The subcommittee evaluated the learning-disability documentation and academic progress of each student-athlete and determined that the documentation submitted by each institution provided objective evidence that each student-athlete should be enrolled in less than 12 hours to accommodate for the student-athlete's learning disability or handicap.

(3)         Budget Impact. None.

b. Nontraditional Academic Calendar ? Bylaw 14.1.8.2.2.1.1.

(1) Recommendation. Accept two credits as the comparable minimum academic load for practice and competition for Knox College (per Bylaw 14.1.8.2.2.1.1), as long as the student-athlete maintains an average of 2.5 credits for all terms in attendance at Knox.

(2) Rationale. The subcommittee acknowledged the unique academic calendar at Knox and the normal credit load for any student-athlete at Knox was three credits, which the subcommittee viewed as the equivalent to a 15-hour credit load. In order to allow a student-athlete to occasionally drop a course (like a 15 credit-hour student-athlete dropping to 12 credit hours), a minimum credit load of two was accepted as long as the student-athlete maintains an average of 2.5 credits for each semester spent at Knox.

(3) Budget Impact. None.
