1.
What did you like most about your experience on the
committee?
?
Meeting other coaches from other regions and
establishing life-long friendships; understanding and better prospective of
ranking and selection process. First
hand overview of time commitment and planning selection and administration of
national tournament.
?
Working with committee members and staff. Everyone was just great and worked hard.
?
Being able to make positive changes in rules; finding
ways to improve the way Championships work; giving back to the sport I love.
?
Interaction with colleagues; chance to make a positive
improvement in operation of committee.
?
Being able to be in on the ground floor of
establishing a national tournament for women?s golf; building friendships with
the other committee members.
?
Working with the committee member and discussing
issues that we felt would benefit the student-athlete experience.
?
The opportunity to interact with other professionals
from all divisions.
?
I was happy with the chance to help improve the
championship experience for athletes.
?
The honest, open, thoughtful conversations and the
integrity of the committee.
?
The opportunity to grow professionally and
personally. The committee was very close
and I have made friends along the way.
?
It was a ?group effort? who truly has Division III
student-athletes interests as its priority.
Also I have learned much about the intricacies of the Championships
format.
?
Interaction with colleagues from around the country;
experiencing and understanding various/different points of view and process for
accomplishing common goals and objectives.
?
Learning about the NCAA and how things ?work?; also
meeting and working with other I wouldn?t have otherwise had the opportunity to
work with.
?
The opportunity to understand the governance and
selection process and meet some great people.
?
I enjoyed everything about my experiences-the people
on the committee have been outstanding to work with and so have the NCAA staff.
?
The ability to have input and make a positive
contribution to the association.
?
Interactions with staff around planning and with
regard to key (illegible).
?
Knowing what was going on in DIII; working with others
who were committed to DIII success; opportunities to meet a variety of people
from difference constituencies.
?
I enjoyed every aspect of the committee and it?s
operation.
?
It was a great learning experience as well as a
wonderful opportunity to have greater insight to the NCAA.
?
?
The interaction with committee members and the NCAA
staff to create a great experience for our student-athletes.
?
Having had significance in the game helping it get
better.
?
I worked with really good people and learned a lot
about how the NCAA functions.
?
It helped me to see the ?larger picture? of collegiate
women?s Division III ice hockey.
?
The people on the committee that I got to work
with-great group; being involved with women?s soccer on the national level
?
Discussing issues and thinking of new ideas
?
Learning more about the inner workings of the NCAA.
?
As a committee chair, I grew as a person from my
committee experience
2.
What did you like least?
?
Overall time commitment; lack of training and
preparation for committee membership; had to jump in with both feet and receive
training in process
?
Changing of liaisons right when we went to 3
divisional championships. Also, wonder if it would ever make sense to keep
administrative assistants in first year of change of liaisons you aren?t
changing both at the same time.
?
The turn over in the liaisons. It seems we sent a lot of time re-educating
our staff.
?
Time constraints, budget limitations, misconceptions
of our role and decision making process communication.
?
Sometimes being handcuffed by red tape or regulations
that cannot be changed.
?
Being away from my family at Thanksgiving.
?
The complete lack of knowledge about the sport of
cross country demonstrated by championships committee.
?
Championship being held Thanksgiving weekend. It was a hardship for all committee members.
?
Not often but the sometimes negative response to
committee proposals by some (illegible) of the membership can be somewhat
frustrating after genuine time and efforts given by the committee.
?
The amount of
work that had to be accomplished at each meeting; however I felt a serious
sense of accomplishment and reward at the end of the session.
?
The beginning was very rocky for me. I almost quit before I started because of the
ineptness of the liaison at that time- errors made by the NCAA were blamed on
others. I was very angry; other
committee members encouraged me to stay.
?
Sunday phone calls.
?
All the paperwork-a necessary evil.
?
Losing (narrowly!) the vote on Playing/Practice season
this past January. I do not really
recall any negative experiences.
?
Can?t think of anything-except frustration in over
time it has taken to obtain our goal, but it is only because it takes time to
make major changes.
?
The loss of Pete Oliszczak. He was the ?best? Asst. Director of
Championships.
?
All positive.
?
Listen top coaches complain and not having sports
specific criteria.
?
The many hours doing stats in order to do Regional and
National rankings. It took away 2 of my
5 workdays a week. It often put me in
the hole at work.
?
Missing the 2002 Annual Meeting when I had my second
child. I met with the committee via
conference call during the meeting.
?
National championship being held over the Thanksgiving
holiday weekend-that?s asking a lot of your committee members
?
Travel from the west coast
?
The days at the championships got a little lone, but I
knew that before accepting.
3.
What changes would you make to enhance the committee
service experience?
?
A manual to receive before hand explaining
responsibilities and process to execute each of the responsibilities.
?
We have the same liaison for at least two years; our
commitment extends through the September meeting. This would allow people to return in
September to make changes that they felt were needed from the
championships. We lose some experience
in September in exchange for experience at the meeting. The reverse would work better.
?
Let committee members whose terms have expired serve
in a 1-year advisory capacity to lend experience to the evolving process of
committee work (consistency).
?
Earphones for conference calls.
?
The experience depends on the leadership of the
committee.
?
I believe this committee would be well served by one
more in-person meeting per year due to workload.
?
Keanah Smith has made a world of difference in my
committee experience-her assistant, Ashley Zurcher, has been good also. More people like Keanah are needed as
liaisons.
?
Better understanding of the time commitment involved
when I joined the committee.
?
Continue to push all the correspondence and paperwork
to be done electronically.
?
Continue to allow the committee to have a major impact
in the direction of this association.
?
Reinstate first class travel.
?
I have no changes; the staff works very hard to ensure
that the committee runs smoothly and efficiently.
?
None, it was wonderful.
?
?
I would like to see one additional committee meeting
prior to the start of the season.
?
Get rid any statistical work that doesn?t have a
purpose. Find a way to allow forms to
self calculate. Get rid of
Region-National records.
?
Start the call on selection Sunday earlier with the
new selection criteria and ranking system being implemented next year, a viable
stats program and lots of communications with the NCAA will be necessary.
?
Well done as is
?
My experience was extremely positive. No changes.
4.
If you resigned from the committee prior to the end of
your term, please identify the reason.
?
I did not, but I had a committee member resign due to
time commitment.
?
I was never officially recognized for 5 years service
to the National Collegiate Championship Committee.
?
Accepted a position at
?
I took another chancellorship at a Division II
University (UM-St. Louis) and hence am moving from Division III to Division
II.

Comments or Questions.
?
Mark Bockelman did a superb job! We made tremendous strides in improving the selection
process, officiating, and administration of tourney. The DIII Basketball Committee should be the
benchmark for other sport committees. We
know how to do it right! Thank you for
the experience!
?
We had well prepared staff, but we had great turnover. We had a new liaison almost every year. I loved my experience and hope to be able to
serve in the future. If you need
anything, please contact me.
?
Thank you for the opportunity to serve the NCAA and
the student-athletes you represent.
?
Hope to have additional opportunity for further NCAA
committee work in the future.
?
Thank you for the honor of serving.
?
I look forward to working on another committee soon.
?
Chris Pohl and other NCAA liaisons were extremely
helpful and knowledgeable!
?
I based my answers to the first 4 questions related to
my experience coming on the committee 4 years ago. At that time. T he only
information I really received that was timely and accurate came from other
committee members-not our liaisons.
Again this was from a person who is no longer @ the NCAA and with my
initial experience that 1st year.
?
Thanks for the opportunity!
?
I look forward to serving again in the not too distant
future.
?
Thanks for the opportunity to serve the NCAA. I would not hesitate to participate again in
the future.
?
I would love to serve any another committee.
?
Too many liaison changes; need more consistency.
? It was a great learning and service experience and I look forward to serving again in the near future.
?
I would absolutely love to on the Field Hockey
Committee before I retire. Also, very
interested on the Committee on Women?s Athletics.
?
Kerri Fagan is a wonderful NCAA staff liaison. She is
organized and easy to work with.
?
The initial communication about my appointment to
serve on the national committee was poor.
I was not contacted to see if I would accept the position (I had
applied/been nominated a year and a half earlier) I found out through an e-mail
to the committee detailing the phone call timeline for the season.
?
Sharon Tufano is a wonderful committee coordinator!
?
It was a pleasure working with Kristin Fasbender and
the NCAA
