REPORT OF THE

NCAA RESEARCH COMMITTEE

 

 

INFORMATIONAL ITEMS. 

 

Association-wide.

 

a.         Research Review Board.  The committee approved the development of an NCAA Research Review Board that will act in a manner similar to an Institutional Review Board on campus.  The policies and procedures will be made available on the NCAA Web site.

 

b.         Research Proposals.  The committee reviewed three research proposals from external researchers, but chose not to fund any of them.

 

c.         Gambling Survey.  It was noted that results from this survey will be made available in the spring of 2004.

 

d.         Gender-Equity Report.  The committee was given a report from the newly released Gender-Equity Report.  That report is available on the NCAA Web site.

 

Division I only.

 

e.         Academic Performance Program.  The committee reviewed a design for this program that will collect data for the Division I Academic Progress Rate Report.

 

f.          Time Demands.  The committee heard a report from Jerry Kingston regarding the progress of the 20/8 Working Group in Division I.  That group requested assistance in creating a research program that would attempt to assess time demand issues among Division I student-athletes.  The committee agreed to set up a subcommittee to assist Mr. Kingston with the design and implementation of such a study.

 

Division III only.

 

g.         Division III Financial Aid Audit.  The committee received a report from staff on this issue and approved the methodology for the audit.  Staff will be creating a collection instrument to be ready by the summer of 2004.
