REPORT OF THE

NCAA COMMITTEE ON WOMEN'S ATHLETICS (CWA)

 

 

INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.

 

Association-wide.

 

a.         Review of 2004 NCAA Convention.  The committee received a report on current intercollegiate gender equity trends and participation numbers from 1988 to 2002.  The committee suggested that the NCAA Convention feature more sessions concerning Olympic sports.  The committee requested staff review the Convention schedule to avoid offering sessions of mutual interest concurrently.

 

b.     Update on Office of Inclusiveness.  The committee received a report from the national office’s senior woman administrator on the office of inclusiveness, which was established as a part of the national office restructuring plan.  The staff is developing a definition of inclusiveness and creating a diagram that outlines the evolution from pre-diversity to diversity, diversity to inclusiveness.

 

c.     Woman of the Year (WOTY) Update.  The committee received an update concerning the WOTY dinner.  The 2004 event is Sunday, October 31.  The dinner will alternate annually between Saturday and Sunday dates.  The Sports Spectacular, run by the National Youth Sports Corporation, continues to be an important part of the weekend for local young people (ages 6-18) and their parents, as well as for the WOTY nominees.  Staff suggested changes to the nomination form and discussed ways to increase the number and diversity of the applicant pool.

 

d.         Title IX Seminar Update.  The committee received an update on the 2004 Title IX Seminar, scheduled for May 17-18 at the Drake Hotel in Chicago.  This will be the 14th year of the seminar.  The committee was asked to provide program and speaker ideas that would have an impact on campuses.  It was also agreed that the first 200 seminar registrants from NCAA member institutions who make hotel reservations at the Drake Hotel will receive a $100 reimbursement toward their two-night lodging expense for the seminar.

 

e.         Women’s Athletics Awards.  The committee reviewed a list of the various national awards given by different associations in each of the women’s sports sponsored by the NCAA.  The committee considered a request to highlight the Wade Trophy in women’s basketball, in conjunction with the 25th anniversary.  The committee agreed to consider, at its next meeting, the concept as it applies to all 25th anniversary celebrations.

 

f.           NACWAA/HERS Program Update.  The committee received an update concerning NACWAA initiatives, including the Women Coaches Academy and NACWAA/HERS Institute.  The committee agreed to assist with 25th anniversary plans, including special projects to chronicle and publicize the history of women’s athletics.


g.         Branding and Communications Update.  The committee received an update on the national office promotional plan for women’s athletics and detailed championships promotional levels, models and support.  The committee also reviewed the tentative sports anniversary celebration programs.

 

h.         Emerging Sports.  The committee was provided with a history of emerging sports and the role CWA has played in the process.  The committee agreed to review the current emerging sports list in detail during its July meeting.

 

 

Division I Only.

 

i.           NCAA Bylaw 14.2.1.3 (Division I) (Pregnancy Exception).  The committee reviewed a letter from Wright State University regarding NCAA Bylaw 14.2.1.3 and requested that staff share the information with the Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports Committee for it to consider whether the bylaw needs further clarification.
