REPORT OF THE

NCAA DIVISION III STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE

 

 

INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.

 

a.         NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Best Practices.  The committee developed the SAAC "Best Practices" document.  The "Best Practices" document will be posted on the SAAC homepage and distributed to conferences and independent institutions.

 

b.         Conference/Independent Institutions SAAC Survey.  The committee developed a survey for distribution to the conferences and independent institutions.  The survey will assist the committee in obtaining information regarding conference and campus SAACs (e.g., meeting frequency, committee composition).  The committee discussed how to continue with the collected information, including suggestions to post the survey information over the SAAC listserve and in the Division III Newsletter.

 

c.         Education Session - Governance and the Legislative Process.  The committee participated in an educational session on the Division III governance and legislative process.

 

d.         2005 NCAA Convention Legislative Proposals.  The committee discussed the 2005 Convention proposed legislation and prepared the committee's position statements.  The committee upheld previous positions from its November 2004 meeting. 

 

e.         Conference and Independent Meetings.  Committee members attended their conference meetings to explain the conference partner program, discuss how to best communicate with their conference and partner conference, discuss upcoming SAAC nominations for vacant positions, discuss best practices, review Convention proposal positions and promote SAAC involvement in conference operations.

 

f.          College Sports Project Update.  Members of the executive subcommittee met with Bob Malekoff, former director of athletics at College of Wooster; and Amy Campbell, director of athletics at Bryn Mawr College during the 2005 NCAA Convention, to communicate the student-athlete voice within the College Sports Project (CSP).  The committee will keep an open line of communication with CSP and pursue future meetings with CSP representatives.

 

g.         Joint SAAC Meeting.  The Division I, II and III SAACs participated in a community outreach activity, donating shoes to the homeless and writing letters to troops abroad while in Dallas, Texas for the NCAA Convention.  During the joint meeting, committee members spoke with NCAA President Myles Brand about Association-wide student-athlete issues.  The committees also received an update from Rachel Newman, assistant director of agent, gambling and amateurism activities, on the status and goals of the Gambling Task Force.  Finally, the committee heard updates from each division.
