NCAA JOINT
MEETING OF THE
COMMITTEE ON
WOMEN’S ATHLETICS (CWA)
AND MINORITY
OPPORTUNITIES AND INTERESTS COMMITTEE (MOIC)
INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.
Association-wide.
a. Office
for Diversity and Inclusion. The
committees received an update on the search for a vice-president for the NCAA
Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and representatives from DHR International,
the search firm selected to assist in the national search, were
introduced. Members of the firm
conducted a question-and-answer session, and committee members articulated
their expectations of the role of the vice-president.
b. Biennial budget process. The committees received an update regarding the biennial budget process.
c.
Update
on coaching education programs. The
committees received an update regarding the NCAA Coaches Academies. An ad hoc committee consisting of
members from both the CWA and MOIC was formed to evaluate and address issues
related to the programs.
d. Review of 2003-04 Race and Gender Demographics of Member Institutions’ Athletic Personnel Report. The committees received an update on the 2003-04 Race and Gender Demographics of NCAA Member Institutions’ Athletics Personnel Report. The committees reviewed the results and discussed ways to collect data that will accurately reflect the number of women and minorities in upper athletics administration.
e. Report
on NCAA summit on athletics opportunities for minority women grant funding
distribution. The committees
received a report on the NCAA summit on athletics opportunities for minority
women. The total amount of grant
money allocated for the seven programs (American Volleyball Coaches Association, Black
Coaches Association; Black Women in Sport Foundation; National Federation of
State High School Associations; Sports Explorer; United States Olympic
Committee; and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association) was
$165,000. The committee received an
update from the National Federation of State High School Association Minority
Women Coaches Program.
f. NCAA internship program. The committees received a report on the NCAA internship program and noted that revisions have been made to the selection criteria with regard to diversity. The 2004-05 intern class was introduced to the committees.
g.
American
Indian mascot. Staff provided
an update on the self-evaluation being conducted by selected institutions and
reported that institutions must respond by May 2005.
h. Confederate
battle flag. The committees
received a report that the South Carolina state chapter of the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) requested that the
Association review the moratorium on awarding NCAA-sponsored pre-determined
championships to states whose flag includes symbols of the confederacy. Staff asked the NAACP to put this
request in writing but has not yet received a response.
