Subject: Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Programs and Policies Inquiry

Colleagues,

First I’d like to inform you that the Division III Commissioner’s Association (DIIICA) has created a Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Committee (SECC). While there is an association-wide committee, the issues they deal with often focus more on Division I concerns (tearing down goalposts, controlling fan celebration/riots, alcohol sales/tailgating etc) which are not as relevant for our division. The DIIICA SECC will focus specifically on DIII issues and ultimately make a great impact on our division.

One of our goals is to dedicate a portion of the DIIICA website (www.diiicomm.org) to sportsmanship and sports ethics policies and programming to serve as a resource to other member institutions and conferences who are seeking such information when creating their own programs. Keeping this in mind, I am requesting you to participate and send any sportsmanship/sports ethics policy or programs (please include any relevant NCAA grant programs as well) to Donna Ledwin, SECC member and DIIICA Vice-President, at ledwin@amcconf.org Such programs/policies may include (but are not limited to): your institutions code of conduct, a unique crowd control statement aside from those provided form the NCAA, an ejection policy, game management policies, crowd control policies, coach/student-athlete educational programs you have used, etc). The initial deadline is April 15th but obviously as policies and programs are created content will be updated. Please be sure to include the name of the institution and your contact information in the actual document so people can contact you to discuss the policy/program if desired.

This is just one exciting initiative the SECC will undertake in its early stages. I am confident this will be a long-standing and productive formation for our membership for many years. I would like to thank DIIICA President Tim Gleason (Ohio Athletic Conference) and the entire DIIICA Executive Committee for agreeing to establish this important committee and also fellow SECC members for their service. Current SECC members are:

Katie Hersey, NEWMAC

Gary Karner, WIAC

Steve Larson, Lake Michigan Conference

Donna Ledwin, AMCC – DIIICA Exec. Rep.

Chuck Mitrano, Empire 8 - Chair

David Nielsen, MIAA

Please let me know if you have any questions. I hope you all have a great weekend.

Regards,

Chuck Mitrano

Empire 8 Commissioner

Chair, DIIICA Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Committee
