REPORT OF THE

DIVISION III CONVENTION-PLANNING SUBCOMMITTEE

 

 

1.         ACTION ITEMS.

 

l          2006 NCAA Convention Schedule.  [Attachment A]

 

(1)        Recommendation.  Approve the Convention schedule noting:

 

(a)        Thursday, January 5 - Division III Faculty Athletics Representatives Association (FARA) preconference from 4 to 8 p.m.  The first two hours will be focused on FARA-specific issues, and the last hour will feature speakers from the NCAA governance staff, with the inclusion of a meal.

 

(b)        Friday, January 6 – Management Council meeting will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Association-wide Centennial celebration activities will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  NAD3AA additional programming from 3 to 5:30 p.m., followed by possible reception 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.  Conference meeting space is also available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

(c)        Saturday January 7 – Division III commissioners will meet from 7:30 a.m. to noon. 

 

(d)        Saturday January 7 – Joint MC/PC/SAAC brunch from 9:30 a.m. to noon, followed immediately by the Presidents Council meeting from noon to 3 p.m. 

 

(e)                Saturday January 7 - NAD3AA Session will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m.; NCAA Opening business session from 4 to 5:30 p.m.; followed by a reception and the NCAA Honors Program at the Murat Theater in downtown Indianapolis.

 

(f)        Sunday, January 8 – President Brand will host a breakfast for chief executive officers (CEOs) from all three divisions from 8 to 9:30 a.m. The Delegates reception will be held at the National office from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

 

(g)        Sunday, January 8 – Division III Forum from 9 to 11:30 a.m.  The program will also focus on legislative issues.

 

(h)        Sunday, January 8 – CEO Issues Forum and lunch to include campus administrators others than CEO’s to whom athletics reports as an
opportunity to focus on the importance of engaging direct reports into


intercollegiate athletics and differing organizational structures.  Also possibly invite a guest speaker.

 

(i)         Monday January 9 – Division III Business Session with consideration of special Division III Year of the Student-Athlete Kickoff as a component of the Business Session.  Program would highlight student-athletes and their contributions to Division III and society by the
decades since the inception of Division III (70’s, 80’s 90’s).  The program is intended to promote and celebrate the division.  Staff will work with Convention management to plan the session with input from subcommittee members.

 

(2)        Budget Impact.  None.

 

 

2.         INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.

 

a.         Association-wide and Division III Educational Topics.  NCAA Convention management staff has developed several Association-wide centennial celebration topics.  [Attachment B]

 

b.         NAD3AA – Division III topics.  TheNAD3AA representatives have identified the following topics:

 

(1)                Friday, January 6 – 3 to 5:30 p.m.

 

Round tables 3 to 5 p.m.

·                     Conference practices related to involvement of SWAs.

·                     Coordination and enhancement of communication between Athletics and student-affairs.

·                     Working effectively with FARs and SWAs.

 

NAD3AA Business Session 5 to 5:30 p.m.

 

(2)        Saturday, January 7 – 1:30 to 3 p.m.

            “Assessment – Are we Doing What We Say We’re Doing?”

·                     How we assess the progress of student-athletes.

·                     Program assessment.

·                     Facility assessment.

·                     Recruiting assessment.

 


c.         2006 Convention Timetable.  The subcommittee reviewed its planning timetable:

 

July/August             Recommendations reviewed and approved by Management and Presidents Councils.

 

September              Subcommittee review and input regarding Division III Business Session program highlighting the Year of the Student-Athlete.

 

October 17-27         Management Council/Presidents Council final review of schedule and programs. 

 

Lat October            Preparation with NCAA staff liaisons.

 

November 1-4         Subcommittee conference call to review Management Council/Presidents Council action related to program/session recommendations; discuss involvement and communication with affiliated groups and committee structure.

 

November 7-11       Communicate with affiliate groups, committee structure and staff liaisons.

 

December 2            Outline/content of presentation, identification of participants and first draft of legislative position papers due.

 

December 9            Draft of multimedia presentation due.

 

December 12-16     Subcommittee conference call – status update; preparation of presentation outline/content by committee structure and affiliate groups.

 

December 21          Final draft of remarks, legislative position papers and Division III Web site posting due.
