ACTION ITEMS.

 

·                     Nonlegislative Items.

 

a.         2007 NCAA Convention Schedule.  [Attachment]

 

(1)        Recommendation.  Approve the Convention schedule noting:

 

(a)        Friday, January 5 – Management Council meeting will be 8 a.m. to
5 p.m.
 

 

(b)        Saturday January 6 – Division III commissioners will meet from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

 

(c)        Saturday January 6 – Joint MC/PC/SAAC brunch from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., followed immediately by the Presidents Council meeting from 10:30 to 1 p.m. 

 

(d)        Saturday, January 6 – FARA - Association-wide programming from 10:30 to 2 p.m.

 

(e)                Saturday January 6 - NAD3AA Session will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 3 p.m.; Senior Administrator with Athletics Oversight meeting from 2 to 3:30 p.m.; NCAA Opening business session from 4 to 5:30 p.m.; followed by a Division III Presidents Council Hosted Reception from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

 

(f)        Sunday, January 7 – President Brand will host a breakfast for
chancellors/presidents from all three divisions from
8 to 9:30 a.m.  The Delegates reception will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m.; followed by the NCAA Honors Celebration from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. 

 

(g)        Sunday, January 7 – Division III Forum from 9 to 11:30 a.m., followed by the Chancellors/Presidents Issues Forum and lunch.

 

(h)        Monday January 8– Division III Business Session from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

b.         Association-wide Educational Topics. 

 

(1)        Recommendation.  Approve and forward the Association-wide and Divisions II and III recommended topics to NCAA Convention management staff:

                 

(a)        Campus Issues Related to Web sites:  Facebook; Myspace; Badjocks.com.  (Association-wide)

 

(b)        Impact of Student Gambling Activities and the Campus Culture.
(Association-wide)

 

(c)        Fan Sportsmanship and Civility.  (Association-wide)

 

(d)        Facility and Development Issues at Small Colleges.  (Divisions II and III)

·                     Use of Facilities to Generate Revenue.

·                     Fundraising for New Facilities.

·                     Partnerships with Companies to Develop and Manage
Facilities.

 

(e)        Marketing and Fundraising for Small College Athletics.  (Divisions II and III)

 

(f)        Changing Fan Culture at Athletics Events:  A look at other venues to understand how fan culture at athletics events is distinctive from other situations where crowds gather - and perhaps gain insight into ways of changing the culture.  (Divisions II and III)

 

(g)        “Game Day” Sportsmanship and Crowd Control within and surrounding the venue.  (Divisions II and III)

c.         NAD3AA - Division III Topics. 

 

(1)        Recommendation.  Approve the following topics for NAD3AA sponsored sessions - Saturday January 6 - 10:30 a.m. to Noon and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.:

 

(a)        Exploring Athletics Department Communication Strategies - Effectively Engaging Student-Athletes; Coaches, FAR’s and Administrators in the Communication “Loop”.


(b)        Risk Management Issues - What Do I Need To Know and Do. - Overview of collaboration between NCAA national office,
institutions, conferences and American Specialty Insurance, followed by roundtable discussions. 

 

(c)        Hosting a NCAA Division III Championship.  Overview of collaboration between NCAA national office, institutions, conferences and local communities.

 

(2)        Estimated Budget Impact.  None.

 

d.         Division III Sunday Issues Forum Topics. 

 

(1)        Recommendation.  Approve the following topics for Sunday Issues Forum noting a goal of greater membership dialogue:

 

(a)        NCAA and Campus Partnership - Integration in Division III:  What does It Mean; How Do We Achieve It; Are We Creating an Overall Positive Environment?

 

(b)        NCAA Executive Committee Working Group to Study Membership Issues - Update (Legislative concepts and long-term options). 

 

(c)        2007 Legislative Proposals - Case Scenarios and Pros and Cons.

 

(d)        Division III Student-Athlete Well-Being - ways to address substance abuse thru year-round education, drug testing or both? (TENTATIVE)

e.         Chancellor/Presidents Luncheon and Issues Forum Topics. 

 

(1)        Recommendation.  Approve the following topics for Chancellor/Presidents Issues Forum:

 

(a)        NCAA SCORE Study Update.

 

(b)        Division III Strategic Initiatives Grant Program - Engagement of all constituents - “Role of Chancellors/Presidents”. 

 

                  (c)        Legislative Review.

f.          Division III Business Session Topics. 

 

(1)        Recommendation.  Approve the following agenda/topics for Monday
Business Session:

 

(a)        Financial Aid Reporting Process - Results and Possible Changes; Commitment to Core Tenet.

 

(b)        Creating an Effective Athletics Leadership Team - legislative and legal issues of SWA. 

 

(c)        Voting.   

 

(2)        Estimated Budget Impact.  None.

 

 

INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.

 

1.         FARA Programming.  The session will include a panel discussion for all divisions on “empowering the FAR.”  A few speakers are being planned; including a president and commissioner.  The session will be followed by a “Best Practices” discussion. 

 

2.         Senior Administration with Athletics Oversight.  The Division III session to be held
Saturday January 7 from
2 to 3:30 p.m. will be coordinated by a group of NASPA members led by Tim Millerick, Austin College.

 

3.      2007 Convention Timetable.  The subcommittee reviewed its planning timetable:

 

July/August                   Recommendations reviewed and approved by Management and Presidents Councils.

 

September                    Subcommittee conference call to review Management
Council/Presidents Council action related to program/session recommendations. 

 

October 16-26               Management Council/Presidents Council final review of schedule and programs. 

 

Mid/late October           Preparation with NCAA staff liaisons.


November 6-10             Subcommittee conference call to review Management
Council/Presidents Council action related to program/session recommendations; discuss involvement and communication with affiliated groups and committee structure.

 

November 13-17           Communicate with affiliate groups, committee structure and staff liaisons.

 

December 4                  Outline/content of presentation, identification of participants and first draft of legislative position papers due.
