REPORT OF THE
NCAA DIVISION III
MANAGEMENT COUNCIL
ACADEMIC ISSUES
SUBCOMMITTEE
INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.
1. Waiver
of NCAA Bylaw 14.1.8.2.1.3 – Final Semester/Quarter. The subcommittee denied a waiver request
from the College of Wooster to permit
a student-athlete to participate in intercollegiate athletics for an additional
32 days beyond the 60 days provided in Bylaw 14.1.8.2.1.3. The subcommittee noted that there were
no extenuating circumstances in this case that would warrant the additional 32
days.
2. Waiver
of Bylaw 14.1.8.2.2.1.1 – Nontraditional Academic Calendars or Cooperative
Education Programs. The
subcommittee approved the University of Chicago's
request to have three courses be considered full-time enrollment for
student-athletes. Based on Chicago's
system of assigning credit, three courses are equivalent to 12-credit hours on
a standard academic calendar.
3. Waiver
of Bylaw 14.1.8.2.2.1.3 – Learning Disabled and Handicapped Student-Athletes.
The subcommittee approved a
waiver of the 12-hour requirement
for a learning-disabled student-athlete at Neumann
College. The subcommittee reviewed the learning-disability
documentation and nine-hour course load recommended by the institution and determined
that objective evidence demonstrated this student-athlete’s need to have
nine hours be considered full time.
