INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.

1.                  Waiver of NCAA Bylaw 14.1.8.2 – Requirement for Competition.  The subcommittee approved a waiver request from Trinity College (Connecticut) to permit a student-athlete to participate in intercollegiate athletics while enrolled in less than 12 credit hours for the 2007 spring semester.  In its approval of the appeal, the subcommittee noted that the student-athlete’s reduced courseload is directly related to cognitive functioning deficits from injuries suffered in a car accident.  Additionally, the subcommittee noted that in light of the student-athlete’s medical circumstances and the rehabilitative nature of her program, a part-time courseload and athletics participation is acceptable.

2.                  Waiver of Bylaw 14.1.8.2 – Requirement for Competition.  The subcommittee approved a waiver request from the College of St. Catherine to permit a student-athlete to participate in intercollegiate athletics while enrolled in less than 12 credit hours for the 2007 spring semester.  In its approval of the appeal, the subcommittee noted that the student-athlete was unable to enroll in her final four-credit class during the 2007 spring term due to a scheduling conflict caused by her enrollment in eight hours of clinical coursework required to complete her nursing degree.  Additionally, the subcommittee noted limitations on the student-athlete’s course selection opportunities throughout her tenure at the institution due to her status as a transfer student.

3.                  Waiver of Bylaw 14.1.8.2 – Requirement for Competition.  The subcommittee approved a waiver request from Wheaton College (Massachusetts) to permit a student-athlete to participate in intercollegiate athletics while enrolled in less than 12 credit hours for the 2007 spring semester.  In its approval of the appeal, the subcommittee noted that the student-athlete’s reduced courseload is directly related to cognitive functioning deficits from the injuries suffered in a car accident.  Additionally, the subcommittee noted that in light of the student-athlete’s medical circumstances and the high potential for both academic motivation and therapeutic benefit, a part-time courseload and athletics participation is acceptable.
