REPORT OF THE

NCAA DIVISION III STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE

 

 

 

INFORMATIONAL ITEMS.

 

1.                  Recruiting Practices.  The recruiting practices ad hoc committee met January 4 to discuss, at the request of the committee, the potential recommendations for proposed legislation from the ad hoc committee.  The ad hoc committee continues to collect data on Division III recruiting practices and will provide legislative recommendations to the committee if appropriate.

 

 

2.                  NCAA Division III Working Group on Membership Issues.  Ms. Hinkley was appointed to serve as the Division III student-athlete representative on the working group and attended its March 2 meeting.  [The group was designed to continue the work of the Executive Committee Working Group on Membership which focused on the Association’s membership structure and growth.  It is charged with developing potential membership models to be discussed at the 2008 Convention and voted on at the 2009 Convention.  Such models range from, but are not limited to, subdivision within Division III and the development of Division IV.]

 

 

3.                  NCAA Division III SAAC Habitat for Humanity Campaign.  The committee received an update on the NCAA Division III SAAC Habitat for Humanity Campaign’s progress.  Fliers directing institutions to the tool kit were distributed to the committee to disseminate at their Convention conference and partner conference meetings, an electronic postcard was distributed January 16 to all Division III institutions, and an on-line survey was developed to track the level of involvement within the membership and success of the program.

 

 

4.                  SAAC Nominations.  The committee received an update on its vacancies.  The project team conducted telephone interviews in March with nominees from the North Eastern Athletic Conference, Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and USA South Athletic Conference; forwarded its recommendations to the Division III Nominating Committee; and will hold new member orientation pending approval by the Nominating Committee and Management Council.

 

 

5.                  Joint SAAC meeting.  The Division I, II and III SAACs participated in a Habitat for Humanity build as its community outreach activity.  President Myles Brand attended the meeting and invited the divisional SAACs to attend the Association-wide menu session, “The Fusion of College Basketball, Racial Diversity, Media, Art and


Urban Life.”  When the committees reconvened afterwards, President Brand discussed the session and solicited feedback and observations.

 

Ms. Ahlgren-Bedics distributed a time demands survey and requested feedback in order to aid the Association’s continuing consideration of student-athlete time demands issues.

 

Each divisional SAAC provided an update about its respective meeting progress, with each preparing to address legislative proposals during business sessions later in the weekend

 

 

6.                  CHAMPS/Life Skills.  Ms. Ahlgren-Bedics met with the committee to discuss the CHAMPS/Life Skills program and request SAAC’s support for legislation mandating the program at all Division III institutions.  The committee will discuss this on its April 9 telephone conference.

 

 

7.                  SCORE and GOALS Update.  Mr. Paskus and Mr. Petr presented Division III data collected in the SCORE and GOALS surveys.  The SAAC shared this information with the Management Council and President’s Council at their January 6 joint breakfast.

 

 

8.                  Committee Appointments.  The committee selected new representatives for the following committee vacancies:
