COMMITTEE INFORMATION FOR INDIVIDUALS

INTERESTED IN POSSIBLY SERVING

ON NCAA COMMITTEES

 

 

1.      NAME OF COMMITTEE:  Membership Committee

 

 

2.      NUMBER OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS:  Nine: The committee must include one Management Council member, one faculty athletics representative, one senior woman administrator, one conference commissioner and at least one a member of an ethnic minority.  At least four positions shall be allocated for men and at least four positions shall be allocated for women.  At least one member shall be appointed from each of the four geographical regions.

 

3.      GENERAL DUTIES OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS

·              Develop and conduct the exploratory, provisional and reclassifying membership programs.

·              Educate the active membership on Division III regulations.

·              Monitor the division's adherence to membership requirements.

·              Consider waivers of membership requirements.

 

4.      NUMBER OF IN-PERSON MEETINGS PER YEAR (include approximate dates and days away from office): The committee meets in-person twice per year.  The meetings are scheduled for two days, and one occurs in late January,  and one occurs in mid June. Please note the other comments section for additional travel and duties.

 

 

5.      NUMBER OF CONFERENCE CALLS PER YEAR (include the usual day of the week and average length of call): The committee conducts monthly one-hour conference calls on a day and time that works best for all committee members.

 

 

6.   OTHER COMMENTS: Committee members travel with staff to visit the campuses of provisional and reclassifying institutions, and also attend educational sessions conducted at the NCAA Convention, and the exploratory and provisional educational sessions conducted at the NCAA national office each fall.  On average, committee members travel to one campus visit and may choose to attend one of the three educational sessions conducted at the national office.  The summer in-person meeting includes an extensive review of the annual reports of each provisional or reclassifying member institution.  It is common for committee members to serve in a mentor capacity to the staff of provisional institutions due to the interaction at these educational meetings. Finally, the membership committee will be involved in information gathering and analysis for the Future of Division III, Phase II initiative, as a main area of focus for that initiative are issues of membership growth and diversity.
