The meeting was called to order at 9:05 a.m. Central time by Mr. Downes.  All were present as noted above.

1.      Review of Previous Minutes.  The NCAA Division III Membership Committee reviewed the minutes from August 26 teleconference meeting and noted the change to the January meeting date.

It was VOTED

"That the August 26 minutes be approved as amended."

2.      Review Conference Autonomy Updated Survey Results.  The committee reviewed the updated results of its conference policy survey based on responses receives since the June preliminary publication of results.  Complete results will be forwarded to the Division III conference commissioners and will be made available to the Future of Division III, Phase II Oversight Committee to aid in the discussions on conference autonomy.

3.      Review Sports-Sponsorship Summary of Provisional Members.  The committee provided a summary of provisional member sports sponsorship for the NCAA Division III Management Council.  At this time, the average sports sponsorship for the two provisional classes are 12.67 and 11.

4.      Review Sport-Sponsorship Recommendations for Several Sports.  The committee reviewed the NCAA Division I sports-sponsorship information for the following emerging and National Collegiate Championship sports: ruby, synchronized swimming, team handball, archery, badminton, bowling and squash.  The committee noted that the minimum contest requirements for the team sports looked high, and then tabled making specific recommendations on any of these sports until sport-specific participant information can be reviewed by the committee.  These sports will become part of the committee's January 2005 discussion of sports-sponsorship requirements in general.

5.      Provisional Member Activities – Tales from the Road.  Committee members that have already taken campus visits shared their experiences and made suggestions about preparing for the visits.  It was suggested to remove the section on awards and benefits, add rules information about amateurism, and alter the schedule to minimum impact on practice schedules (have the coaches' session in the morning).

6.      Huntingdon College.  The committee reviewed the situation where Huntingdon College did not receive the written logistic information for the provisional member orientation session.  The institution did receive a letter describing the requirement that the chief executive officer and director of athletics attend the provisional member orientation as a condition of their active membership, and the October 4 date was communicated to the director of athletics via a phone call.  The institution was not sent the logistic information due to a staff oversight.  The committee determined that the director of athletics should attend the October 4 session in person, but that the chief executive officer can be briefed in person at the 2005 NCAA Convention.
