EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

FUTURE OF DIVISION III FOCUS GROUPS SELECTION PROCESS

I. Selection Process

The following parameters were used to select participants and form each focus group:

1. A maximum of one person per conference was selected to participate, regardless of the number of people nominated per conference (39 conferences had nominees).  Representatives from 12 independent schools also were selected, consistent with the percentage of independent schools in Division III.

2. All participants are from member campuses.  Conference commissioners will have the opportunity to engage in similar discussions during their meeting at the NCAA office in June

3. The preliminary goal was to select a maximum of 48 total people, 12 persons in each focus group (at least one person per category, CEO, AD, SWA, FAR, in each focus group).

4. Balancing gender, administrative position and geography were goals in the formation of each focus group.

5. Individuals were selected in the following order to establish the focus groups (132 total nominees with a total of 46 placed into groups).

a.       Placed nine CEOs first (12 total nominees)

b.       Placed six FARs (11 total nominees)

c.       Placed four SWAs (9 nominees)

d.       Placed 27 ADs (76 nominees)

e.       Placed seven independents (12 nominees)

6. Overall representation in the four focus groups includes 39 conferences and 12 independents; each group includes the following representation:

Group 1 = 12 total (seven males and five females ? three CEOs, one SWA, one FAR and seven ADs). In-person (Indianapolis) April 22 (p.m.).

Group 2 = 12 total (eight males and four females ? three CEOs, one SWA, two FARs, and six ADs). In-person (Indianapolis) April 23 (a.m.).

Group 3 = 12 total (six males and six females ? two CEOs, one SWA, one FAR and eight ADs). In-person (Indianapolis) April 23 (p.m.).

Group 4 = 10 Total (six males and four females ? one CEO, one SWA, two FARs and six ADs). Telephone focus group (April 17, 11 a.m.).
