NCAA DIVISION III NOMINATING COMMITTEE

Summary of Recommendations

ACTION ITEMS ? MANAGEMENT COUNCIL ONLY

1. ISSUE:	Association-wide Committee Appointments.
Committee Recommendation:
Approve the following committee reappointment and appointment. Terms begin September 1, 2003. (1) Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC): Reappoint Venera Flores, University of Dallas; (2) MOIC: Appoint T. J. Shelton, assistant director of athletics, Washington University, St. Louis.
Management Council Action:
Approved the recommendation to reappoint Venera Flores, University of Dallas, to the MOIC. The Council deferred the appointment of T.J. Shelton to 2004, given the term extension of Eugene Marshall, MOIC chair.
2. ISSUE:	Division III Committee Appointment.
Committee Recommendation:
Approve the following committee appointment. Term begins immediately. l Division III Financial Aid and Awards Committee: Appoint Craven Williams, president, Greensboro College, to replace Michael McPherson, who resigned from the committee.
Management Council Action:
Approved the appointment.

3. ISSUE:	NCAA Bylaw 21.8.1.4.2 ? Composition Requirements.
Committee Recommendation:
Amend Bylaw 21.8.1.4 (composition requirements for sport committees) to expand the definition of an athletics administrator to read ?(e.g., athletics directors, associate or assistant athletics directors, senior woman administrators, individuals who are employed full time as administrators at member conferences, or individuals who are employed both part time as administrators by member conferences and full time by member institutions.)?
Management Council Action:
Declined to adopt noncontroversial legislation and referred the recommendation back to the committee, suggesting that it present an expanded list of titles.
4. ISSUE:	2004 NCAA Convention.
Committee Recommendation:
Approve the recommendation that the Nominating Committee?s slate of nominees report, included as part of the Division III Business Session, contain statistical information (e.g., the number of nominations received during the past year, the number of Division III committee and committee members). The committee also recommends that the slate of nominees for the Management Council and Presidents Council be asked to stand when their names are announced.
Management Council Action:
Endorsed the committee?s recommendation.
5. ISSUE:	Division III Rowing Committee Appointment.
Committee Recommendation:
Approve a waiver of NCAA Bylaw 21.8.1.3 (Vacancies) for the Division III Women?s Rowing Committee, allowing a representative of a conference to serve immediately following another representative of the same conference.
Management Council Action:
Approved the waiver.

ITEMS OF INFORMATION

1. ISSUE:	Nominating Committee Guiding Principles and Operating Policies.
Committee Action:
The committee revised its operating policies to include a section outlining the duties and responsibilities of Nominating Committee members. The committee will review the revised guidelines on an upcoming conference call.

2. ISSUE:	Committee Service.
Committee Action:
The committee discussed recognition of committee members and ways to assess and evaluate service on Division III committees. The committee: (1) Approved a committee service recognition letter. The letter will be sent to the CEOs of outgoing committee members to recognize their committee service. (2) Approved a committee service questionnaire. The questionnaire will be sent to outgoing committee members with a copy of the CEO service recognition letter. The questionnaire will also be sent to resigning committee members via e-mail. The responses will be compiled to provide the committee with information for periodic review.

Accepted the information.
3. ISSUE:	Nominating Committee Members? Regional Assignments.
Committee Action:
The committee recommended that the regional representative assignments list and Nominating Committee members? contact information be forwarded to the Division III sports committee chairs for their information.
Management Council Action:
Accepted the information.

4. ISSUE:	2004 NCAA Convention.
Committee Action:
The committee recommended that the National Association of Division III Athletics Administrators be contacted to request approximately 15 minutes of its 2004 Convention session to discuss committee service and the nominations process.
