Postseason opportunities.  Amend Bylaw 31.2.1.1 to permit schools to participate in postseason opportunities in lieu of those sponsored by the NCAA, NAIA and NCCAA, even if eligible to participate in the NCAA championship.  An institution shall declare on a regular basis (e.g., once every four years) if it wishes to be considered for NCAA championships or other postseason events.

Delayed Effective Date.  August 1, 2006.

Sponsor.  Joint PC/MC Subcommittee on the Future of Division III (Championships Subgroup).

Management Council Recommendation:

Refer issue to the Championships Committee for consideration at a subsequent Convention.  The Council noted:

l             The proposed legislation’s impact on the current automatic qualification process, particularly for qualifying conferences and sports sponsorship, must be better defined.

l             Sport-by-sport declarations should be considered.

l             Incorporate the issue into the proposed resolution regarding membership growth, championships access and greater exercise of institutional and conference autonomy.
