Summary of Recommendations

 

PRESIDENTS COUNCIL ACTION ITEMS

 

1.  ISSUE:

2004 NCAA Convention Schedule. 

Subcommittee Recommendation:

 

Approve the Convention schedule noting:

 

(a)                Tightening the entire Convention schedule to encourage participation of Division III chief executive officers and opportunity for greater conference/independent meetings and dialogue regarding future of Division III legislative proposals.

 

(b)               Altering the start of the Division III Presidents Council meeting (11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, January 10 – beginning with a luncheon).

 

(c)                Addition of Division III CEO issues forum and luncheon (11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. – Sunday, January 11).

 

(d)        Addition of a joint Presidents Council, Management Council and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) breakfast (7 to 8:30 a.m. Sunday, January 11).

 

(e)        Splitting and renaming the traditional Division III Business Session into two days (9 to 11 a.m. Sunday, January 11, “Future of Division III – Legislative Issues Forum” and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, January 12, “Future of Division III – Roll Call and Paddle Voting”) to permit opportunity for review of legislative issues, followed by conference/independent meetings prior to roll call and paddle voting. 

 

(f)         Scheduling the Post-Convention Management Council meeting to follow the Division III Business Session (3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, January 12).

 

(g)        Addition of a delegates luncheon on Sunday.

 

Management Council Recommendation:

Approve the 2004 Convention schedule.

 



2.  ISSUE:

Association-Wide and Presidential Programming Topics – 2004 Convention. 

Subcommittee Recommendation:

 

Approve the following recommended Association-wide and Presidential menu sessions:

 

Presidential: 

·                    Funding Intercollegiate Athletics During Fiscally Challenging Times.

·                    Legal Issues – Title IX and Affirmative Action.

 

Association-wide:

·                    Sportsmanship Summit – Strategies for Institutions.

·                    Funding Intercollegiate Athletics During Fiscally Challenging Times.

·                    USOC Structure.

 

Management Council Recommendation:

Approve the recommended topics, noting the addition of the following SAAC topics:

 

·                    Time constraints between academics and athletics.

·                    Diversity in coaching and game officials.

·                    Recruiting.

·                     Division III Regional Leadership Conferences.

 

 

ACTION ITEM – MANAGEMENT COUNCIL ONLY

 

ISSUE:

Division III Topics – 2004 Convention.

Subcommittee Recommendation:

 

Approve the following Division III specific topic for consideration by the NAD3AA:  Fundraising in Fiscally Challenging Times.

 

Management Council Action:

Approved the Division III-specific topic sponsored by the NAD3AA.

 


ITEMS OF INFORMATION

 

1.  ISSUE:

Presidential Involvement. 

Subcommittee Action:

 

The subcommittee noted the importance of the legislative issues at the 2004 Convention and discussed ways to encourage Division III CEOs to attend.  The subcommittee recommended that NCAA Convention Management consider creating a highlight brochure or document to include a  “presidents schedule” and distribute it to all CEOs no later than August.

 

Management Council Recommendation:

Accepted the information.

 

2.  ISSUE:

2004 Convention Timetable. 

Subcommittee Action:

 

The subcommittee reviewed the planning timetable:

 

·        May/June               Programs/session topics developed and forwarded to subcommittee for review.

·        July/August             Recommendations reviewed and approved by Management and Presidents Councils.

·        Mid-October          Preparation meeting with NCAA staff liaisons.

·        Oct. 20-30             Management and Presidents Councils final review of schedule/programs.

·        Late Oct./Nov.       Subcommittee conference call to review Management Council/Presidents Council action related to program/session recommendations; discuss involvement and communication with affiliated groups and committee structure.

·        November 3-7       Communicate with affiliate groups, committee structure and staff liaisons.

·        December 5           Outline/content of presentation, identification of participants due.

·        December 12         Draft of multimedia presentation due.

·        December 15-19    Subcommittee conference call – status update; preparation of presentation outline/content by committee structure and affiliate groups.

·        December 22         Final draft of remarks and Division III Web site posting due.
