PRESIDENTS COUNCIL ACTION ITEM

 

ISSUE:

Association-Wide Committee Chair Appointments.

Committee Recommendation:

 

l             Approve Herb Deromedi, Central Michigan University, Division I-A, as new chair of the Football Rules Committee.

l             Approve the appointment of Cedric Dempsey and John Nabor to the Honors Committee.

 

Management Council Recommendation:

 

Approve the appointments.

ACTION ITEMS – MANAGEMENT COUNCIL ONLY

 

1.  ISSUE:

American Indian Mascot and Conferate Battle Flag Update.

Management Council Action:

 

Review the draft recommendations being forwarded to the Executive Committee for action at its August 8 meeting.

 


2.  ISSUE:

Association-Wide Strategic Planning.

Management Council Action:

 

The Council engaged in an Association-wide strategic-planning session facilitated by Tecker Consultants.  Also, the Council reviewed the strategic-planning process flowchart.

 

 


 

3.  ISSUE:

Committee/Subcommittee Immediate Vacancies.

Management Council Action:

 

Made the following appointments to fill immediate committee/subcommittee vacancies:

 

l         Association-wide committee – Sportmanship and Ethical Conduct (Harshaw)

l         Division III Strategic-Planning Subcommittee (Miranda)

l         Division III Playing and Practice Seasons Subcommittee (Harshaw)

 

4.  ISSUE:

Creating a More Responsive, Less Bureaucratic NCAA.

Management Council Action:

 

Discussed the goal of creating a less bureaucratic, more responsive NCAA, noting its support.

 

5.  ISSUE:

Season of Competition Waiver (Bylaw 14).

Management Council Action:

 

Approved standards for waivers of Bylaw 14 regarding academic and general eligibility requirements for those student-athletes on active duty in the armed forces.

 

l             If the student-athlete missed any portion of the traditional segment, restore the season.

l             If the student-athlete completes the traditional segment, restore only the nontraditional segment.

 

Referred the standards to Division III Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee for application.

 

6.  ISSUE:

Management Council Policies and Procedures.

Management Council Action:

 

Approved the amended policies and procedures and appointed a subcommittee (Johnson, Lunder, Miranda) to review the policies and procedures, specifically noting the officer election process, for presentation at the October meeting.
